I don't live in New York City, so none of my tax dollars are working on this. Perhaps you are mistaking the federal Department of Education with the New York City Department of Education.

Edited to add links.

Posting bare links with provocative subject lines is troll behaviour IMHO, not worthy of a discussion forum.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Dave, I didn't make comment because I'd get jumped on by all the unicorn breeders who think this kind of stuff is just wonderful. I think you know how I feel about the subject in the link.

I'll assume you didn't read the link just because I was the one that posted it. No problem here with that because I don't care if you read my links or not.

A New York City education will now cover readin’, ’ritin’ -- and rubbers.

Sex ed, which becomes mandatory in city middle and high schools next year, is meant to stem unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases among teens. But parents may be shocked by parts of the Department of Education’s “recommended” curriculum.

I mistake nothing. The NY City Board of Ed adopted the curriculum put forth by the federal Dep of Ed. Any way you cut it, the tax payers are paying for this garbage.

Quote

* Kids ages 11 and 12 sort “risk cards” to rate the safety of various activities, including “intercourse using a condom and an oil-based lubricant,’’ mutual masturbation, French kissing, oral sex and anal sex.

* Teens are referred to resources such as Columbia University’s Web site Go Ask Alice, which explores topics like “@#$%&” and other positions, “sadomasochistic sex play,” phone sex, oral sex with braces, fetishes, porn stars, vibrators and bestiality.

No wonder parents are working three jobs to get their kids into private schools.

Except that the federal Department of Education doesn't have a curriculum for sex education that it has 'put forth.' It leaves curricular development to the states and localities. You are misreading the article. The 'Department of Education' mentioned in the NY Post is the NYC DOE, not the federal one.

From the article:

"Sex ed, which becomes mandatory in city middle and high schools next year, is meant to stem unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases among teens."

So I guess swampy is PRO unplanned pregnancies and STDs among teens. Why do you hate teens?

Kids need to know this stuff. NEED TO KNOW.

If parents don't want to teach this stuff to their kids, I'm glad that schools will do it. If parents want to remove their kids from this program, let the kids pass a test to show they don't need it and that their parents have taught them well.

Its a shame you resent people younger than you having sex and getting practical advice about it. Kids that are maturing sexually should know where to buy condoms, what activities pose risks, and where they can get reliable information on sex anonymously. Go ask Alice is a pretty benign site, that answer kids questions in a much more clinical and up front manner than typical bawdy teenage conversations, or the disapproving silence of mom and dad.

Chill out.

My mistake about the "federal" DOE. The point is the same regardless of who came up with the curriculum. My point is the same. Tax payers are paying for this garbage.

Twelve year olds don't NEED to know about S&M, bestiality do they? I guess these parents can't be too shocked when they come home and find junior screwing the dog. After all he learned about it at school.

Well, the point isn't exactly the same. Because it's not MY tax dollars. Voters in NYC can oust the local school board or mayor if they disagree with their policy decisions. I'm not terribly interested in the NYC public school system curriculum.

Oh, Swampy, just talking about bestiality inspires people to do it! Your post on this thread probably just sent half of the forum after their pets. Look out Fido!

For the the record here's gaa's response abort bestiality. So dry and boring any 12 year old would be bored by the second paragraph and thinking about some other 'shocking' question about @#$%&.

Again, let go of the resentment, you'll be much happier.

What more Conservative and Republican position can you champion? This is all about local control and not federal involvement in public education. This is a campaign point for the Repubs who do not want any state or federal control over local decisions.

Interesting that you mention the Go Ask Alice site. That is one of the nation's best public health websites for teens and young adults. Its founder was given a prestigious award by the American Public Health Association for developing this very innovative question and answer internet health site. The site is about general health issues that concern teens and young adults most - not just sexual health.
In order to get the information you referenced above, the teen would have to go looking for it specifically. And if they are going to look that up, wouldn't it be better that the questions were answered by a health care professional than on some porn site or by one of their friends?
Frankly I'd appreciate a curriculum that referred kids to this type of site.

Sorry if I'm considered a prude, BIMHO this is why kids don't learn math, reading, science, history etc. Too much time taken up in the classroom with this kind of garbage. We can't teach kids morality, but we sure can teach them 15 ways to hell how to have sex.

Swampy I'm very familiar with sex ed curriculum in high school and middle schools. Both of my kids had their semester of health in 9th grade that included sexual health. They do not teach "15 ways how to have sex," they teach about health and they say that the only guaranteed way to prevent pregnancy and/or STD's is abstinence. THe NY Post article you linked says that is what NYC schools will be teaching too.
Your grandkids can find the Go Ask Alice site from home computers too. In fact without basic health information, which you for some reason think should be withheld, they are more likely to go someplace like that looking for answers because they won't have the basic information they need to take care of themselves.
I hope you at least let them have internet access, they're going to need it.
There are things that kids learn more comfortably from teachers than from parents, and they can ask questions without fear of parents reactions. They need and deserve to be able to do that. The attitudes you seem to want to teach do not lead to health.

Bestiality is not part of the NYC curriculum. That's abundantly clear from reading the Murdoch-smut-rag that Swampy linked us to. But if you just need to get your garters in a wad about the latest manufactured outrage, I guess this is as good a topic as any.

We'll drop creationism and use the time for a mandatory orgy. Curriculum problem solved!

The 16-year old has been in private school since grade 6. One of the first courses he attended was health and the human reproductive system. The school provides reinforcement year to year and nothing NYC does will be news to him or his classmates.

This whole idea that paying women to have babies out of wedlock is a huge cost is way overblown. Another talking point simply meant to manipulate. What about all of the deadbeat dads that force women into gov't assistance? Where's that outrage?

I'm all for what NYC is doing. It's ludicrous that we're such prudes about teaching kids the facts of life and how their bodies work.

Sex Ed in FL has been around for ages. I had it in Jr high back in the 50's. It was taught in PE. Basic reproductive system, STDs, and a strong admonition to practice abstinence. Of course back then there was a great deal of stigma and shame attached to havin a baby out of wedlock. Now days girls get paid to have bastard children. Ain't progress wonderful? (sarcasm intended)

Now Daddy didn't like trouble, but if it came along
Everyone that knew him knew which side that he'd be on
He never was a hero, or this county's shinin' light
But you could always find him standing up
For what he thought was right

He'd say you've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything
You've got to be your own man not a puppet on a string
Never compromise what's right and uphold your family name
You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything

Now we might have been better off or owned a bigger house
If Daddy had done more givin' in or a little more backing down
But we always had plenty just living his advice
Whatever you do today you'll have to sleep with tonight

He'd say you've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything
You've got to be your own man not a puppet on a string
Never compromise what's right and uphold your family name
You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything

Now I know that things are different than they were in Daddy's days
But I still believe what makes a man really hasn't changed

You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything
You've got to be your own man not a puppet on a string
Never compromise what's right and uphold your family name
You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything
