It's a terrible event.

But I always find it curious that much reporting is given when shootings happen in white areas. When the shootings occur in black areas (just about every day in my city), you really don't hear much about them.

Your city/state/nation obviously needs better gun control. Feel free to report each and every murder by gun, if you wish.
Mass shootings by one criminal are a more unique though not infrequent crime, that's why they get more national news attention than single shootings.
And most of the time, that shooter is a white guy.

"Eeerily, just minutes before the mayhem, Mayor Bloomberg was warning about the dangers of “too many guns on the streets” on his weekly radio show.

“The argument guns don’t kill people, people kill people is one of the most disingenuous things you can say,” he said shortrly before 9 a.m. while discussing tougher guns laws being proposed in Albany.

“It does take a person to pull the trigger, but if they didn’t have the gun... We are the only developed country in the world with this problem.”

That's really terrible, but when nobody dies these things tend not to get into national media. The mass shooting involving teens I think should have gotten more notice, but there it is on HuffPo.

Okay, I'll give you that one. I still find "every day" a bit tough to swallow. It's hard to have a serious discussion about whether the news is overlooking black mass shootings if we are starting out with fictional information.

Okay, I'll give you that one. I still find "every day" a bit tough to swallow. It's hard to have a serious discussion about whether the news is overlooking black mass shootings if we are starting out with fictional information.

I think M-o-M was simply running with a 'personal' definition of "mass shooting" so he could make all contrary-like.

From what I understand, many of the wounded were from the fusillade of legal police weapons discharged at the shooter.

Gun control means using both hands..

I wouldn't call this a mass shooting. The shooter killed one person, the person with which he was having a feud. He then opened up on the cops. His gun only had 8 bullets, even though 11 people were shot. Most of the people injured were hit by police bullets.

Shootings happen just about every day in this city - 381 in 2011. Most of the shootings here are black on black shootings, which receive minor media attention (if at all).

A bit confusing as to what to call this. Murder followed by suicide by cop followed by mass shooting by cops?


I'm a little alarmed that the police hit 8 bystanders (that's the last report I saw) while attempting to neutralize one armed person.

And I'm not second-guessing the people who were getting shot at. Bad situation all around.

You are off base with your put down there Mac. Stevie is very clearly not dismissing the death toll from gun violence in any city. She's simply pointing out that "mass public shootings" get more media attention and are more rare than the daily barrage of gun violence that plagues our country.
In this particular event it's the location of the crime that is going to make it a big story.
The huge number of Chicago shootings the other night DID make national news, I saw that story repeated everywhere. Fortunately nobody was killed in that particular and troubling spree of gun violence.

So now we learn that three people were hit by police shots fired, the other nine were hit by fragments that ricocheted. Obviously three more than police would like but not as bad as the headlines sound.
These headlines "police shot nine people" are a bit much.
Nobody is dead, from that shooting, the injuries are not even that serious. I'm guessing that if you ask any of those 9 if they were glad those police were there to stop that guy, they'll probably say yes.
Injured is better than dead.

The horrific amount of violence in the black community is an entirely different topic than crazy people who mow down a dozen people. Again, this proved not to be the case here, but it doesn't change the fact that what gets reported in the media is determined by public interest. Which is why we hear about Kristin doodly-bop cheating on what's his face more than we do about third party candidates, the effect of poverty on children, and yes black-on-black crime. And the list could go on.

You asked a question and I attempted to clarify why your question was a non sequitur. I don't remember saying I didn't care. I don't owe you a catalog of my personal beliefs.

Would you be as generous if people with concealed carry had brought about the mayhem? Don't make me laugh. And before you say the injuries are not "serious", allow me to graze you with a gentle scratch of a 45?

A person concealing a gun did bring about this mayhem. He bought the gun legally in Florida 10 years ago but had not permit to carry in NYC.

He's the dead suspect. I don't feel too generous towards him but I'm sorry he felt the need to go out this way.

Which goes back to the fact that we're only getting riled up about white people being killed and that all of the hoopla generated in this forum has been because of whites being gunned down and not other "minorities" because those deaths are not in the public interest.

Of course, the Empire State Building shooting was nowhere near a "mass shooting" and was simply a white on white shooting - which received national attention. Whereas in my city, black on black (or minority) shooting happen everyday and barely receive mention in the local press.
