just saw an inconvenient truth - what is the counterpoint?

I just saw al gore' flick, an inconvenient truth last night and found it very convincing. I'm curious what counterpoint arguments exist, aside from those put forth by the oil industry.

The counterpoint has always been that natural cycles are so long that any anecdotal evidence today can't dismiss them as the "cause". I;m a believer that natural cycles may bring significant temperature changes, but it seems asinine IMHO to throw out the aggravating factor of hydrocarbon emissions since the burst of the Industrial Revolution.

But for many __________ (I'll leave that blank for anyone to fill in with their own favorite plural noun), it's easy to bury a need for any serious effort at a solution. Like the disgusting growth of the national debt, it will be our children's and grandchildren's problem. We'll be dead of other causes by then.

If Bush would just see the film It might show he has balls and has an open mind. Those who are closed to ideas are doomed. Gore seems quite fearless. Bush/Cheney fearfull.
Closed minded and reactionary.

A man who is of "sound mind" is one who keeps the inner madman under lock and key.

The counterpoint is often "Clinton did it!" or "Gore invented the internet, ha-ha!"

It is, obviously, good propaganda.
Gore never took a science course, while in college. The movie is a political prop for his next run for presidency....

You don't NEED to be a scientist to understand what's going on. That's why he came up with the presentation. He has been quite up-front about his layman status in the earth sciences.

He has said that learning from experts in his decades in public service was what led to his development of this presentation.

Aside from the occasional bible pumping psuedo-scientist, you won't find many in the scientific community that disagree with his warnings or conclusions. In fact, he is simply the messenger. Which would explain the need for max to attack him so.

If anyone on this board hasn't read Crichton's 'State of Fear', I suggest doing so. The whole Global Warming thing is such a crock.

Al has two houses, plus his 'farm' in Tenn. where he leases mineral rights to a
company mining zinc on the property for $20,000 annually.

The tailings from the mine pollute the nearby Caney Fork River and then
run into the larger Cumberland river.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has issued notices of
violation against the operation, informing the company that runs the mine and pays Gore
his $20,000 a year that it had infringed the Tennessee Water Quality Control Act due to
high levels of zinc in the river.

The operation continues as does the pollution. You would think that Mr. Environment Himself
wouldn't have to be cited for an operation on his own property that is polluting public waterways
with toxic substances.

"Mr. Environment" wasn't cited, the company was.

If you have ever been nvolved in mineral rights, you would know that those who own the land don't have a lot of say so once the deal is inked.

And besides under your hat, your point is?

THe "Environmentalist" movement is NOT based on scientific, rational facts.

It is based on "Immotional feelings".

That is why it is made up of Liberals. This is their GOD !!!

Other Liberals give money to these "wacko" causes, because they also "Feel" inadequate, so
by giving money they "Feel" that they have accomplished something to help the World !!!

The WORST thing to an Environmentalist is actual "FACT" that proves their GOD is WRONG !!!

"Immotional feelings".

When your feelings just keep moving one way and the other and you can't quite pin them down.

Al Jr.owns those mineral rights. With him and his family being in the mining business for decades and generations, he knew before he inked any deal, what it entailed. Pleading ignorance in this case is illustratively hypocritical for anybody claiiming to be a defender of the environment .

Especially for a guy who

You don't "own" them if they are subleased to another, check the TN and US laws.

Sounds like this is about what "it" is. If Gore feels that stongly about the environment and has a tenant who is polluting and cannot stop said tenant, seems he could divest himself of that property.

Maybe that whats at play here. Could be nothing more than a shakedown to get old Al's property on the cheap. Either way, given this administrations glaring attempts to dismantle every federal environmental regulation in existence, it' a big nothing.

Except to the Drudge types.

I find it interesting that a conversation on whether his movie is true becomes a discussion of the person himself. I guess thats easier than debating his movie.
