If this were true, the take away lesson would seem to be: "Steve Irwin converted, and died a painful and pointless death, leaving his wife a widow and making orphans of his children."

I don't get your point. To me the take away lesson would be, everyone has the right to do whatever they want to do, and taking satisfaction in their death upon learning they converted to Christianity hints at a form of bigotry or at least nastiness. I personally don't give a damn if he worshipped Homer Simpson. This is like Weekly World News crap, who cares anyway?
