Air America Radio going bye-bye?

Wow:

[apnews.excite.com]

Apparently Air America wasn't so successful. You'd think with all of the Bush-haters out there, this radio station would be printing money!

I don't get it.

Maybe Bush haters don't need some ranting fool to rally them to the cause.

Maybe the Republicans do that job all by themselves.

Wealthy white males, OTOH, need constant reminding that they are being oppressed.

You certainly have that one right! Al Franken is wealthy and white, and he'll soon be out of a J-O-B.

Not if he decides to run for the Senate.

Radio is so... 20th century. Such a backwards-looking, nostalgic medium. No wonder conservatives own it! :p

Oh, and it doesn't look like AA is going off the air anytime soon.

Most liberals just don't have the intelligence to listen to talk radio and make judgments for
themselves, and if they did have that intelligence, they wouldn't be liberals. Besides, they
have 24/7 liberalism on TV. They don't need radio. The liberal market is saturated.

Air America had nothing but freaks on the network..... Franken,
Garofalo, Rhodes.....need I list more?

These three maniacs..... I am sure are on some type of medication in
order to keep their lids on.

No offence to others who require meds..... in order to deal with reality. It
is no shame.....except when the hatred within yourself(self-loathing)is so
profound that you must spew hatred towards others in order to elevate
your own extremely low self-esteem.

These people cannot deal with the demons within.....so they create a
straw demon that they can rail on. Much like the local dictators in Iran,
NK,....etc.

The stations bankruptcy only proves that a freak show can only play in
the local town once a year at the circus, not everyday.

People get tired of the same old shtickidy-doo-doo.

These three freaks are boring after a few sessions and have very little to
offer society other than to run down decent people who are trying their
best to make us safe from the crazies out there.

These type of media people.......are dangerous and should be completely
marginalized.

They are personally bankrupt with regards to common sense and
decency.

And one more note about AA,

To forgive is divine.

To err is human.

To Err American in unprofitable, unsustainable, stupid and unforgiveable.

I agree that the people they have on AA aren't that great. Rhodes has some great info, but spews too much hate. Franken just isn't that interesting.I just think that the style of get all pissed off doesn't play well with more liberal folks...though it works great for conservatives (Rush, Savage, O'reilly, etc. - nobody spews hate like those folks). I also believe that the AA shows do fine - and even beat some of their competition - in the major markets, but can't do anything in the middle of the country (e.g. where the bulk of republicans are). Just take a look at an electoral college map and you'll see what I mean.

Berzeko, et. al. who criticize the spewing of hatred by spewing more hatred should take a long look in the mirror...

Sorry- I used to listen to Rush on the way home from work, but he starting believing that he was more important than his material.. heck, back in the late 90's. So I stopped.. Now I listen to NPR on the way in. It makes me drive in the left hand lane more, but I get to work faster that way....

"Talk Radio" Echh. Imagine every political poster here trying to come up with enough material to fill a 30 minute slot, without sounding stupid or repeating themselves. At least Ho-ward knows that people who listen to talk radio are mentally about 10 years old, and like to talk about @#$%&...

In another all to infrequent bout of clarity cbelt gets it. The only talk radio worth the listen is sports talk where you can call in and personally trash the Indians, Browns or The Ohio State, in fact any Ohio team you'd like.

Having a Buckeye* State team on their schedule may have saved the season for the heretofore unimpressive Patriots.

Hit 'em where it hurts.

The ratings for Air America are pretty good in some markets. In Portland, the station that carries Air America is the #2 AM station and the #6 station overall.

The problem is that the format really doesn't work for people with critical thinking skills.

The conservative talk shows follow a simple formula:

1: Tell the listener who to hate.

2: Tell the listener who to blame.

3: Take a call from a listener who will repeat the last talking point.

4: Congratulate the caller for being smart.

5: Sell some Gold Bond medicated powders.

6: GOTO 1:

Air America's one insurmountable problem is that it takes longer to explain the liberal position on any issue than it takes to say "Clinton got a @#$%&", which is just about the largest complete datum that can be transmitted between commercials on AM radio.

Liberals don't want to have their fears and prejudices echoed by voices on the radio. It is depressing. We want facts. We want research and analysis. And we want it presented in long segments uninterrupted by ads for "PC Anywhere" and mortgage brokers.

x-uri: nailed it.

The internet is much more important for the political left because research and nuanced analysis can be presented without time constrains, plus interaction and collaboration with the audience is greatly enhanced. Of course, all this stuff works for the right just as well.

And sure, some blogs and their readership can tend to be just as bad as AM radio in terms of hatemongering or intellectual fluffery, but I'd say the average level of discussion on either side of the political spectrum is much higher.

I also listen to NPR quite a bit. Now that's good radio. I'd say they do a fair job of providing a balanced approach, but the depth and breadth of discussion is always about ten steps above anything else on the radio dial.

As for dissing Ohio State: I'd watch out for their basketball team, though Greg "Manchild" Oden needs to heal up ASAP. They've got Fab Five-level talent coming in this year.

Weren't most of their "expert" talk-show hosts nothing more than failed comedians?

Maybe that's why liberal talk radio is having such dire problems. If their spokesmouths can't make it as comedians, what makes them qualified as political experts?

No, matt, believe it or not, probably for the same reasons.

I mean, come on: I'm as patriotic as the next guy...hopefully MORE so...but I think we've all probably had just about enough of this Bush presidency. Iraq turned into a real quagmire, there's a bunch of crap happening at home, and Bush just keeps making quotable quotes.

I can't keep a straight face when he says things like that.

I always picture Will Farrell imitating Bush with that quote. "Freedom haters. They misunderestimated us. Strategious-ness. It'll take time for us to rebuild the choas over there."

He who? Who he?

I voted a primarily Democratic ticket here in Washington State, because the candidates had better ideas and made more sense. I voted for Bush in both presidential elections, but I voted for Clinton before that.

If the Dems try to run Hillary, I'll probably vote Republican...but of course, it remains to be seen who the Republicans will throw at us.

Even though the GOP controls all branches of the federal government, the majority of governor's offices, most corporate boardrooms and yes, this country's major news outlets (I'll respect ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN more when they stop airing panic pieces on the disease du jour or running fluff pieces on religion, celebrities, Internet lore and the like), the right wingers stil need some enemy to bash and still feel the need to consider themselves underdogs. Maybe Orwell was right.

I'm a left wing 'Merka-hater, and I think I tuned into Air America twice (once because my friend's band was playing on it). I don't need a choir preachin' to me. I actually watched Faux News more, if only for a few good laughts (remember the "War on Christmas"/"War on Easter"???) The only talk radio shows I really listen to are Brian Lehrer and Leonard Lopate on WNYC in New York weekdays. They are polite, can tolerate a wide variety of views (even the occasoinal crackpot caller) and have fascinating guests.

No, I'm a swingin' voter. Be very afraid.

Seriously, though, my conscience is clear. I vote for the PERSON. Not the ticket.

Wow...I didn't peg you as the narrow-minded type.

So, it's your position that situations or conditions never change? Everyhting is so black-and-white for you?

I believe that the Iraq war could have been handled better. I also believe the Dems didn't offer up a viable alternative to Bush. Voting for someone does not mean you must blindly accept 100% of their policies. It doesn't mean you cannot lobby for change.

Try not to be so simplistic.

Marching blinding into an unnecessary and unjust war was the fault of both parties. I'm from the camp that voted with my feet and begged them both to vote no to "unecessary" war. I'm a democrat and feel that it's my obligation to hold democratic feet to the fire. To be the spine in the party.
