Sunday afternoon thoughts

Trump's first official foreign trip: it's about the major religions (Saudi Arabia, Israel, Vatican) This is so weird for one of our least religious presidents ever. What is he trying to say? He's deeply offended Muslims, Jews and the Pope himself. Is it an apology tour? (ahem).

Speaking of the Vatican: Callista Gingrich? Really??? Newt's trophy third wife, who was sleeping with him for about 10 years before he divorced wife #2, is going to be ambassador to the Vatican from the Trump administration? Now that I think about it that makes perfect sense.

Who in the White House is leaking to the press? It has to be a person (or people) very close to Trump. We'll find out eventually but I'm very curious.

Paying off political favors.

He has no intellect to understand that a woman who blatantly and unrepentantly slept with a notorious philanderer and embraced divorce might offend Catholics and he lacks the depth of character to care even if he did understand it.

Well, she is Catholic and managed to convert Newt to that faith. He applied to have the Catholic church annul his previous marriage, so officially they only recognize this current marriage.

Yeah, more than the marriage thing (you don't have to be a saint to do good work) I'm thinking about the gravitas of her predecessors. People involved in significant human services work at a national and international level.
Miguel Diaz, Ken Hackett.

Mrs. Gingrich writes children's books and plays in a choir. Relative to her predecessors in the role of Ambassador to the Holy See, she's quite a lightweight.

Gravitas is a great word in this circumstance.

She's no Miguel Diaz... Well, with the sexual harassment accusations... Okay, she's no Ken Hackett.

Will this mean that Newt will be moving there with her?

Wouldn't be surprised if they come up with some way to profit from this.

"Speaking of the Vatican: Callista Gingrich? Really???"

Honestly... I don't care. My life and the lives of everyone I know and everyone I've ever heard of will be unchanged by this move. Trump is using the appt to offer a trophy for a supporter - every prez does this.

I cannot remember who to credit for this, but someone on TV said that Trump had heard a joke about "A priest, a rabbi, and an imam walk into a country club..." and this inspired the trip.

You know, I was wondering if 45 will alter the way he entertains. He loves all the regal formality of the Saudi's because it gives him his well deserved "real king of the hill" appearance. All the servant running around bring tea at the conference etc. Look for the Black limo to be replaced with a gold carriage, scepter and robes.

If he wants to use his own money to stuff like that, fine.

But not my money.

I do have to agree that Trump probably thought he'd died and gone to Ostentatious Heaven.
