Why can't they just build a second or third tier like most places are doing?

Seems pretty stupid to widen in this day and age, and getting rid of the rail line will come back to haunt them big time.

Elected officials should be able to at least score above the 35% percentile on the Sims City game before taking office.

Probably because it would be much cheaper to widen the existing freeway. Widening only requires levelling the ground, paving it, and making sure rainfall has adequate drainage from the road surface. Multi-tiered freeways require a great deal more initial structure as well as more expensive upkeep in the long run.

In some areas widening isn't an option, but one thing Texas has no shortage of is space for expansion.

It's our multi-lane highways that they hate.

18 lanes in some stretches.

It's not like they don't have room for it.

It seems clear that this is only the first step in an attempt to reduce the ferocious traffic entering Houston.

It's a little known fact that adding lanes is only half of the equation for reducing traffic. The other half is intelligent design of on-ramps... the fewer the number of on-ramps, the fewer slowdowns for entering cars.

Given that they have gone to the extreme of making an 18-lane highway, it seems clear that the next step is to completely eliminate entrances to the highway.

When you think about it, it's the perfect solution o Houston's traffic problems. And it has the added benefit of limiting the number of illegal immigrants who can enter Houston on any given day.

What the article doesn't mention is that it's only 4 normal lanes with 14 passing lanes...

Or by the time you get into the carpool lane in the middle, you're in Louisiana.

Actually, it may be 26 lanes in some places when it's done.

This must be the Katy Freeway.

It has ancillary roads now, to minimize entrance /exit ramps.
2-lane westbound ancillary, 3-west bound, 1HOV west . 12 lanes total.
They're just doubling that.

To be fair, that's not one 18 lane wide expanse of asphalt. It's several parallel roads.
4 to 6 HOV lanes, (2+2,3+3) , then highway, then the parrallel ancillary roads, which provide access to cross-roads.

Edit: IIRC, the posted speed limit is 80MPH day/65MPH night.

Just another example of one of the biggest ongoing frauds in the US, highway construction. Politicos of all flavors have their hands in this cookie jar. Worse than the outright graft and bribes, is the construction will be shoddy, concrete way too thin, and like thousands of others, will need Millions of dollars in repairs within 12 months of completion.

The roadway thickness for US interstates averages less that 6 inches. European legislation requires a minimum of 30cm (8.11 inches). The Autobahn averages 27 inches thick! We build cheap roads in the US for premium prices. Another way election campaigns are funded and the wealthy get wealthier.

Was anyone really surprised when the 'Mob' got into the concrete biz?

Texas, where if God wanted Texans to ski, he would have made bullsh!t white.

90% of the state is wasteland, but there are a few oasis' to be found here and there.

I once read that European highways were bid based on the total cost and maintenance for some long time (like 30 years).

Here in the good ole USA, it's lowest bidder most likely, and that's just for the construction. Maintenance doesn't figure in usually...

That system might have been interesting if used on the (Boston) Big Dig. Somebody would today be bankrupt with the State/Federal govs picking up the maintainance/repair tab.

Hell, if Texas wants out of the Union I say let 'em go! That State is costing all of the rest of us money in terms of Federal Spending Received Per Dollar of Taxes Paid by State. As of 2004 they had moved up to number 18, taking $1.30 for every $1.00 they put in.

It would be intriguing to see some more up to date data.

Adding extra lanes to a highway so more cars can use it is just adding to global pollution. Shouldn't you be thinking of a way to reduce it rather than add to it, after all, it's not just a problem that will affect the USA in the not too distant future.
That's why it's called "Global pollution".
I do understand that most of your shopping centers are situated away from town and city centers, so the need for transportation is in a different league to GB, but there must be a more environmentally friendly way to get people from A to B.

What exactly in Houston is worth driving to? It would make sense to have an 18 lane road leaving town, but there just don't seem to be any other destinations worth hurrying to.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Actually it works Davester. The I-10 is the through Houston highway also known as the Katy Freeway, it allows one to paas through Houston uncontaminated, but raises the question...WTF wants to go to Sugarland or Katy, Texas?

It use to be the destination for those wanting to kneel in front of Tom DeLay but that's history. Best they could hope for today is to break down in front of max's house.

You probably would be.

Send Jeb over, it's not like he will get very far (especially when sent by Texas). Jeb is smart enough to keep a low profile to avoid any deep investigating.
