Groceries. Gasoline. Medical care. Marijuana, in some places. All have been designated essential to society in more than a dozen states that have ordered many other businesses to close.

But what about guns?

Firearm and ammunition sales have soared in recent weeks, so clearly, some Americans want them. A gun industry association is lobbying federal and state governments to categorize firearm manufacturers and dealers as critical infrastructure, complaining that F.B.I. background checks are slowing things down as more people try to purchase weapons.

But officials have been split over whether gun stores and ammunition dealers can remain open alongside pharmacies, gas stations and laundromats, leading to confusion and legal challenges as at least 19 states have issued some form of stay-at-home orders. In Ohio, Illinois and Michigan, gun stores have been deemed essential. In New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, they have not.

sure, cut off law enforcement from their equipment suppliers. The shop I use north of Seattle supplies quite a few of the smaller departments up north in Western Washington.

The shop that reworks triggers for me supplies most of the city and county law enforcement in SW Washington, and NW Oregon. He builds their SWAT/ERT weapons for them too. Sure, cut them off.

Lots of panic buying. Some people hoard TP. Some hoard ammo. To the point that there is a real shortage of both.

Um... RacerX has a very deep understanding of the commerce by police departments. The 'retail' operation he mentioned also manufactures and customizes weapons for the police. We're not talking about the federal government's defense deals. We're talking about small departments buying ammo for training and tactical purposes. We're talking about individual officers customizing weapons for improving safety and performance.

A good police officer trains with all of their weapons, lethal and non-lethal. Regularly. The days of Barney Fife not being allowed to have bullets is long gone.

yes law enforcement should have all the tools they need and I'm not aware of any agency not having access to that, but please share if you know of any examples and we can all write to the Governor.

Just because a retail shop closes to the public for health reasons, that doesn't mean that police can't access the supplies they need.

Virginia's Democratic governor has closed gun stores as non-essential businesses. Across the river, Maryland's Republican governor has kept gun stores open as essential to "reduce the threat to human health caused by the transmission of the novel coronavirus in Maryland, and to protect and save lives."

Exactly! Who needs a police force, ever, in that case. I do like your example of a person who would think like this, but curiously never previously.

It's like they'd wake up suddenly and say, "Hey! What about owning a GUN? Never thought of that before! There's no training or whatever involved, right? I mean, this virus and the roving horde of neighbors *any day now* is obviously an emergency."

The government has revised the list, and they are essential. New Jersey has already had an executive order allowing them to open. Other states likely have, or will soon.

My issue was with in WA for example, you couldn't even legally borrow a firearm because you couldn't run the background check.

I have a friend who is retired Navy SWCC. He had to sell off his firearms to pay for his wife's chemo. I couldn't loan him a spare shotgun or pistol.
