Honestly, since the political side is a free for all - post whatever you want. All in this thread or start a new. Many will NOT read the political side at all but if linked to this thread will read it at least.

I agree. Important information is mandated to be posted to this side. I guess when the response to this pandemic has been so badly handled that comments about it must be moved to this side to protect the sensitivities of some members, it’s sad. Truth hurts.

UK experience... this is why PPE is critical. And why the Federal government's incompetence in the US can become critical. Because when so many medical professionals become ill, healthcare collapses and every very sick patient WILL die.

Someone said this in 2014:

Quote

There may and likely will come a time in which we have both an airborne disease that is deadly. And in order for us to deal with that effectively, we have to put in place an infrastructure — not just here at home, but globally — that allows us to see it quickly, isolate it quickly, respond to it quickly. And it also requires us to continue the same path of basic research that is being done here at NIH...

So that if and when a new strain of flu, like the Spanish flu, crops up five years from now or a decade from now, we’ve made the investment and we’re further along to be able to catch it. It is a smart investment for us to make. It’s not just insurance; it is knowing that down the road we’re going to continue to have problems like this — particularly in a globalized world where you move from one side of the world to the other in a day.

Oddly enough, not a word about “total authority”.

Anyone see Governor Newsom's big announcement today?

What a bunch of crap that was. No specifics, just vague "we need all of this to happen" with no timeline.

There is no timeline - how can anyone know the timeline? There are conditions that have to be met before any dates are announced. CA is now reaching its peak in infections (we hope). Would you rather he just pull a date out of his ass like Trump's Easter date? How does that help?

A friend of mine passed today from the COVID-19.

He, his wife, and I drove city bus for many years. Great guy, big heart, so funny. I was the photographer for their daughter’s quenceanera. His wife has tested positive too, fingers crossed for her.

The bunch of us hired back then grew up together on the job. Everyone is saddened and shaken.

Be safe…

We know it’s nearly impossible to get many people to support something they cannot literally see or touch, or that cannot be proven to impact them personally. These are abstract concepts, and “theoretical” (considered false).

As of this morning, a little over 2 million confirmed cases and almost 130,000 deaths. That works out to a roughly 6.5% fatality rate, a lot higher than the 1-2% rate bandied about a month or two ago. Is anybody in government/media discussing this alarming figure?

Until we actually have surveillance sampling in place where cases are reported (weeks and months away in many spots), we won't know what the broader infection rate is. We should not assume that 'confirmed cases' in any way approximates total cases.

The governor does NOT have a plan. He just listed a bunch of things that need to happen, with NO PLAN of how to get those things done.

What did he announce they were doing to get those 6 things in place? Nothing at all.
I guess they will just wait until they happen on their own or someone else does it.

Political BS.

Too bad I have to post this here but this is something that I think might be of interest regarding the virus and should be exempt from politics. Might be worth looking into for someone here.

Do you know that Folding@Home is also working on CoVid-19 solutions? I didn't till I got this from MicroCenter. They ask to join their team but I'm sure Forum F@H teams can work for this too:

Oh, you can post over there, you just have to do it like everyone else posting about strange shopping experiences of hard to find items (why are things hard to find?) or about their stimulus check received (for what? Why are there stimulus checks?) or posts about good news you have (why, is something bad happening somewhere in the news?)

It’s ALL about the packaging, friend.

SHAME on MicrCenter for using the covid word in their graphic, tho. Controversy!

fwiw, there was some whinging about why anyone was bothering with antibody tests.

From the medrxiv preprint server:

Santa Clara County results are in based on 3330 people on 4/3 and 4/4:

Quote

The unadjusted prevalence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in Santa Clara County was 1.5% (exact binomial 95CI 1.11-1.97%), and the population-weighted prevalence was 2.81% (95CI 2.24-3.37%). Under the three scenarios for test performance characteristics, the population prevalence of COVID-19 in Santa Clara ranged from 2.49% (95CI 1.80-3.17%) to 4.16% (2.58-5.70%). These prevalence estimates represent a range between 48,000 and 81,000 people infected in Santa Clara County by early April, 50-85-fold more than the number of confirmed cases. Conclusions The population prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in Santa Clara County implies that the infection is much more widespread than indicated by the number of confirmed cases. Population prevalence estimates can now be used to calibrate epidemic and mortality projections.

Hmmm... Well, just spitballing here...

in a discussion on the matter, someone *might* mention that the federal government is doing next to nothing to encourage testing or bring easy-access to tests -- whether virus or antibody -- to the general public.

That might lead to some highly descriptive language. Something like "sedition" on the part of the "orange menace and the cohorts he has appointed to tear apart the federal government and ensure the demise of this nation as a world power."

So, maybe this is the right side of the forum for this stuff after all.

Yep. The title of the thread only applies to the Tips and Deals side. Title has to stay the same for a moved thread on the Ranting side. Unfortunately, some people only read thread titles and newspaper headlines and stay uninformed because they do't bother reading the actual text.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
