Somewhat disappointing but now that I've adjusted my expectations, I'd love to see the NRA go down. She's currently calling out Wayne LaPierre.

This may prove to be pretty wonderful.

Bankrupting them and causing them to dissolve is a GREAT idea. They can be replaced by organizations that are actually involved in gun SAFETY and training. They've infected the gun owner population for too long.

What is probably going to happen is that Oliver North, who told us a year ago that this was going on and tried to get LaPierre to step down, is going to start his own wingnut gun club which won't be any better but at least it won't steal from its members. Hopefully.

There are lots of preachers that come to mind, here's one example.

Quote

A US televangelist has asked his followers to help fund his fourth private jet - because Jesus "wouldn't be riding a donkey".

Jesse Duplantis said God had told him to buy a Falcon 7X for $54m (£41m).

He added he was hesitant about the purchase at first, but said God had told him: "I didn't ask you to pay for it. I asked you to believe for it."

Although preachers owning private jets is not unusual, this particular appeal has caused controversy.

Twitter users responded to the request with disbelief, with many quoting Bible verses warning against greed and "false prophets", or suggesting that the money could be better used to help the poor.

In a video address posted on his website, 68-year-old Mr Duplantis explained: "You know, I've owned three different jets in my life, and I've used them and just burning them up for the Lord Jesus Christ.

"Now, some people believe that preachers shouldn't have jets. I really believe that preachers ought to go on every available voice, every available outlet, to get this Gospel preached to the world."

Also, one possible good thing to come ofthis comes to mind. A friend of mine who is quite liberal but is a competitive target shooter told me he had to join the NRA to participate in certain events (IIRC, this was a couple of years ago).

If I’m remembering that correctly, this NY AG action would be a good opportunity to split the current NRA into a legitimate gun-related issue organization (safety/target shooting competitions, etc) and a political GOP/gun nut organization.

I've been an NRA member for years. Yes, to compete here in the US in sanctioned events, your NRA number is required, as they also keep the records, verify rankings, etc. My national ranking is through them, for example.

That being said, they DO do a lot of good in training, safety, and opportunities to those bothering to learn, rather than decide their opinions by feelings. I believe in their idea, but not in many ways they operate, and certainly NOT in their vocal denial about any financial and ethical B$ that those at the top are very likely doing.

I say bring on the external independent audit. If nothing is wrong, there is nothing to fear.

Now, that goes against my very conservative principals of innocent until proven guilty, but I think everyone would be better off seeing the unbiased facts, and making intelligent thoughtful decisions, by both sides.

There are millions of mandatory federal firearms background checks every month. 40% are first time buyers, and over the past 4 months or so, 60% of the new buyers have identified as african american on the 4473 forms. Quite an uptick in other ethnic groups as well. So there are well over a million new owners every month.

It is in EVERYONE'S best interests that competent, well trained instructors be available to make sure those LEGALLY PURCHASED firearms are used safely and legally. The NRA trains those trainers. I am likely getting my pistol and rifle instructor's certification in September and October through an NRA Master Trainer. We are fortunate that our Sportsman's Club has one in our membership. He also trains the Scouting trainers for just the cost of materials.

The NRA does a lot of good. Now if they have been unethical and illegal at the top, sure, can the bastiges. But those doing the work at the bottom and the mid level do good, whether you know it or not.

I defend the organization, but not necessarily the leaders. A lot like the Republican Party.

cbelt3 and pdq hav a valid point. Gutting the upper floors is likely warranted. Get back to the core mission of training and outreach, and lobbying through education of the lawmakers.

Not quite sure why the NY AG is involved, unless the organization is chartered in the state of New York.

Hey, I'm all for these big "non profits" getting audited frequently, and if fraud is found, go after those in the know, not just those responsible. Don't care what the "cause" is, non profits cheating is never good. It screws over those doing good work in good faith.

I'm pretty up on it. Might be specifics I am unaware of, and I'm fine with that. Been following the gathering storm for maybe the past 5-7 years.

All I know that is irrefutable, is that there are plenty of NRA paid employees doing good work, and far more volunteers training and teaching. Those at the top, I'm sure that there are more than a handful deserving of jail time. And lots more who knew or suspected and kept quiet.

I welcome the forced transparency. I'm VERY skeptical of the timing.

It also says a lot about the spouses and adult children of those doing these things supposedly for decades too. How do THEY not know about the trips, home, yachts and jet loans/rentals being sketchy at best?

Why didn't they demand an audit 2 years ago, 4 years ago? People were calling shennanigans when Obama was in office. I didn't say "Democrat" Maybe it is the AG hoping to run for higher office to further her career. Happens all the time, by both parties.

IMO there has to be a pretty significant plan to how they're going to approach this. They know who the NRA is and they know who their supporters are and they know how they'll react.

Personally, I'm not sure why they didn't just let the organization continue to rot - perhaps they want to cut off the flow of campaign dollars? Maybe it undercuts a governing body to allow flagrant abuse to continue. I'm not sure but I suspect we'll find out.

Anyway, you seem willing to speculate about impure motives on the part of the prosecution while highlighting the good the NRA does. Setting an extremely high bar for one side and an extremely low bar for another. Familiar territory.

No, not at all. Blaming the janitor for the actions of the CEO is ridiculous. Don't blame those doing the work. Blame those doing the crimes. If even a fraction of what is accused is true, it's a lot in my opinion. I hope they serve a long time if found guilty. It really effs things up for ALL non profits.

And anyone in the state's AG office is just doing their job. But the person at the top directs and schedules this stuff. "Timing" is usually a political thing. If they were ready 6 months ago, or 16, why not then? Not saying they were. Odd that all there ducks are in a row right now. Same day Trump's tax records were handed over. One Two punch I think. Legal, sure. I would have held off until October and really bring the screws to bear. Keep the pressure up.

Sure, but perhaps a dozen people pulled all nighters and made late night calls to judges to get it ready to announce today. I was the neighbor for the King County prosecuting attorney. They did it all the time. Norm Maleng, wife Judy, can't remember the son and daughter's names. Hers might have been Kelly. Died in a sledding accident.

I remember when he started to cry foul. And past presidents chimed in too. Wayne is CEO or senior chief executive or some such. The President is voted in by the board, with input from the members.

Naturally the NRA is screaming about a political hit job and Trump is barfing out unhelpful nonsense.

"That's a very terrible thing that just happened," he told reporters yesterday. "I think the NRA should move to Texas and lead a very good and beautiful life. And I've told them that for a long time. I think they should move to Texas."

Good plan, Your Dementedness! Wonder why it never occurred to your pal Wayne to pack up and move his operation to the Lone Star State. Might have something to do with New York retaining jurisdiction so that lawbreakers can't just pack up and leave town at will. Just a guess!

As bad as the NRA looks here, the IRS looks WORSE. Every section of this complaint points out that this conduct violated both New York law and the federal tax code. Moreover, most of the information was disclosed publicly in the media last year. It was all out there, and yet somehow, somehow the IRS has taken exactly zero interest in apparent lawbreaking by one of the nation's most prominent charities.

Wonder why.
