Hotter and hotter US and China relations

Why it matters: Even at the height of Trump’s trade war, his administration never hit China as hard, as fast, and on as many fronts as it is right now.

Last night, Trump escalated his campaign to claw apart the Chinese and American tech worlds with executive orders that threaten to ban both TikTok and massive global messaging app WeChat.

Today, the Treasury Department sanctioned Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s Beijing-backed leader for “implementing Beijing’s policies of suppression of freedom and democratic processes.”

That move follows sanctions on the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, a powerful paramilitary organization, for its role in the mass detention of ethnic minorities.

The U.S. has closed China’s consulate in Houston, stepped up its efforts to keep Chinese telecom giant Huawei out of allies’ 5G networks, and even warned blue chip American companies that they could face legal penalties for doing Beijing’s bidding.

Health Secretary Alex Azar will soon become the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Taiwan in four decades, in a pointed signal of support for the self-governing island that has infuriated Beijing.

Cheeto thinks he is keeping his fans happy.

I think it's all for show, nothing is really taking place. Sanctions against Cary Lam and the Hong Kong bozos? She has no financial dealing with the U.S..
TikTok and WeChat? Can't get safer. There's bipartisan suspicions about the apps. (Plus, I think it's a bad miscalculation about pissing off tens of millions of kids, even if they can't vote...he's given himself 45 days on this as well.)
What does matter? Notice any banning of China manufactured Apple products, or any other huge economic links? In addition, Trump can't stop Europe and the rest of the world from trading with China.

Tariffs? That's turned out to be a bungled show as well with Trump compromised almost completely. It's down to China buying more grain. Great work, Don.

Taiwan? Nobody's invading Taiwan. So it's easy to send some ships into the Strait. Meanwhile, China keeps expanding its claims to large swaths of S.E. Asia's seas, where it does count.

Hong Kong? China pulled it off. The financial powerhouse has not been touched by Trump. (While H.K. gets swallowed)

I think China's main fear is that Trump is going to do something so insane they will have to react. I believe they feel confident enough that they can wrestle with the U.S. at this time in history.

Trump thinks phony bouts are reality.
They are not.
