The Department of Health and Human Services has pulled the plug on a planned $250 million public service ad campaign tied to the coronavirus pandemic. Part of the plan would've involved giving mall Santa Claus performers – as well as elves and Mrs. Claus'searly access to an eventual COVID-19 vaccine in exchange for promoting the benefits of vaccination.

Nope. Not making this up. Or, as Mediaite put it:

Quote

No, seriously.

...and all this was apparently the brainchild of...wait for it...Michael Caputo, who shortly thereafter went off his meds and started raving about left wing hit squads forming all over the country.

Quote

“I cannot wait to tell the president. He’s going to love this.” [Caputo said]

In fact, it might not have come to the light of day if an audio recording of Caputo had not been made of the conversation he had with (again, not making this up) the "chairman of the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas" in August. They had Dennis Quaid lined up for the commercial:

Quote

In an Instagram video posted on September 26, Quaid, who had previously praised President Trump’s response to the virus, said that he’s “feeling some outrage and a lot of disappointment” about the response to his involvement and “cancel-culture media” is twisting his words. “Nothing could be further from the truth. I did a PSA for Dr. Anthony Fauci...It was about the importance of wearing a mask and social distancing and it was in no way political.”

Turns out Dr. Fauci didn't make the cut for the Santa commercial blitz, in favor of Santa (and Quaid?).

To the disappointment of the Santas, HHS confirmed on Friday to the Wall Street Journal that the ad campaign had been suspended. As Slate notes:

Quote

It has since been scrapped and the HHS spokesman denies that HHS Secretary Alex Azar had any idea that it was in the works.

$250M HHS ad campaign funded with tax dollars, in the works since August (at least) and the Secretary of HHS is shocked, SHOCKED! to hear about it.

Take a look. The twitter comments alone are hilarious!
