and issue a pardon for the Criminal in Chief?

Which would not be popular with HIS people, of course and would probably not win over any converts, but just thinking out loud.

Why cannot 45 simply pardon himself for any federal crimes?

The Constitution only provides that “[t]he President . . . shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.” No limit on it in the actual text.

A deal will be cut with NY and the US will continue the tradition (a good sane tradition) of not charging previous Presidents with criminal behavior. That would be a good decision.

The underlings - Barr, in particular, along with multiple others - ought to be subject to the full process of law.

I think Pence will become president for a week and pardon the Dumpster fire and family for all federal crimes. It is a risky move but he is a good poodle and would probably do it to say that he is the real 46th president.

Pence is just cagey enough to renege on his promise to pardon Trump. I can hear Cheeto screaming that he un-resigns.

That would be the best, I can already picture McConnell hi-fiving Pence.

You could see the Utah GOP party split over this and bring Romney, making him a formal independent from the RNC.

This same split in the GOP coalition can be seen in Arizona.

There is a good reason why the answer is 'no'. One could argue that the Nixon pardon did actually help heal the nation. Nixon played his part. He cancelled himself properly. He didn't say a word for YEARS and when he did, he did not try to tear down the existing government.

Pardoning Trump will not heal anything. And it won't shield him from prosecution anyway. He will just sit on the sidelines and try to tear the world apart. We don't need to help him.

It's very unlikely that the U.S Justice Department will pursue criminal prosecution against the former president.

It would be so politically radioactive as to render the Biden administration paralyzed, and the electorate more divided and angry than ever.

New York state has plenty of crimes to investigate and prosecute, and there's no reason not to let those play out.

If those circumstances should become somehow a reality, you cannot nor should you prosecute someone for exercising lawful authority, no matter how much you may disagree with their course of action.
