Trump trashing ANWR on his way out the door

He’s just plain evil.

The Trump administration is advancing plans to auction drilling rights in the U.S. Arctic National Wildlife Refuge before the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, who has vowed to block oil exploration in the rugged Alaska wilderness.

However, as the WaPo puts it:

Quote

It is unclear how much appetite there is in the oil and gas industry for drilling in the refuge, given the lack of infrastructure there and the public backlash that could accompany such a move. The area provides habitat for more than 270 species, including the world’s remaining Southern Beaufort Sea polar bears, 250 musk oxen and 300,000 snow geese.

It’s hard to see anyone making much money on this, given the current price of oil. And I would guess that the Exxon Mobils of the world recognize the radioactive nature of the negative optics of drilling there.

It seems more like of a last minute F-U to environmentalists than anything.

In a completely unrelated item (same WaPo link):

At the Energy Department, officials may weaken energy-efficiency requirements for shower heads before Inauguration Day.

Toilets and incandescent light bulbs come next, no doubt. So much to trash, so little time.

Thankfully mostly symbolic, as it would take many months to ramp up operations to actually drill, and of course, winter.

Don't forget the bane of western civilization, the low-flush toilet.
