Two more abandonments to join Trump's long list of surrender to fanatics and dictators

Trump orders Pentagon to pull 2,500 troops from Afghanistan and Iraq
[thehill.com]

President Trump has ordered the Pentagon to pull 2,500 U.S. troops from Afghanistan and Iraq by mid-January, acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller announced Tuesday.

The Defense Department will cut the number of troops in Afghanistan from 4,500 to 2,500 and the number of forces in Iraq from 3,000 to 2,500 by Jan. 15, days before Trump is set to leave office.

“I am formally announcing that we will implement President Trump’s orders to continue our repositioning of forces” from Afghanistan and Iraq, Miller told reporters at the Pentagon.

Wow, I guess the Taliban really started meeting benchmarks quickly! Because, you know, as all Republicans know, giving your enemy a withdrawal date before the fight is over is just a timed surrender. Right?

facepalm

the military has long argued against going below 4,500 troops in Afghanistan.

Conditions on the ground do not warrant a further drawdown, they have said, as the Taliban has failed to uphold its agreement with the United States for peace in the country.

That sentiment was repeated in a Pentagon watchdog report released only hours before the drawdown order Tuesday that found that the Taliban has conducted a “small number” of attacks against U.S.-led coalition forces in Afghanistan, despite its February agreement with the Trump administration banning such attacks.

The Operation Freedom’s Sentinel report marks the first official confirmation that the Taliban has launched attacks against coalition forces in violation of the U.S.-Taliban deal.

Since the deal was signed, the Taliban has stepped up attacks against Afghan forces, which U.S. officials have repeatedly condemned as threatening the peace process.

"He had 4 years to do this, and he's pulling this stunt now, with zero plan behind it."

He's paying the generals back for their disloyalty.

As predicted. He's burning the country down. Out of spite.
I expect him to start fires in the White House and blame the British.

NATO chief warns of high price if troops leave Afghanistan
[apnews.com]

BRUSSELS (AP) — NATO could pay a heavy price for leaving Afghanistan too early, its chief warned Tuesday after a U.S. official said President Donald Trump is expected to withdraw a significant number of American troops from the conflict-ravaged country in the coming weeks.

NATO has fewer than 12,000 troops from dozens of nations in Afghanistan helping to train and advise the country’s national security forces. More than half are not U.S. troops, but the 30-nation alliance relies heavily on the United States for transport, air support, logistics and other assistance. It’s unlikely that NATO could even wind down its operation without U.S. help.

“We now face a difficult decision. We have been in Afghanistan for almost 20 years, and no NATO ally wants to stay any longer than necessary. But at the same time, the price for leaving too soon or in an uncoordinated way could be very high,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in a statement Tuesday.

He said Afghanistan still “risks becoming once again a platform for international terrorists to plan and organize attacks on our homelands. And ISIS (Islamic State) could rebuild in Afghanistan the terror caliphate it lost in Syria and Iraq.”

Maybe the military will not be able to get it done as quickly as they hope.
I mean perhaps they will have some equipment that doesn’t work or something. Just saying.

Why stop this?

I'm good with leaving after 20+ years of wasted lives and occupying a land we have no claim on. If it's a mess later than it's our mess. We cannot nor will we clean up all the messes we've created. Getting out is a first step.

There are ways to get out responsibly, and there are ways to cause more harm (and possibly suck you back in, despite what you want) by getting out stupidly.

I'm with you on getting out of these wars, but just bringing troops home doesn't accomplish that goal.
