Iran’s “top nuclear scientist” assassinated near Tehran

I don’t like this a bit.

Quote

Iran's most senior nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh has been assassinated near the capital Tehran, the country's defence ministry has confirmed.

...Iranian news agencies said assailants targeted his car with a bomb before shooting at him.

Between 2010 and 2012, four Iranian nuclear scientists were assassinated and Iran has accused Israel of complicity in the killings.

This is like killing another “al qaeda’s second-in-command”, except that in addition to being ultimately futile, he worked for (whether we like it or not) Iran’s elected government. At some point, this kind of thing is going to come home to roost.

And there's this other news from a few days ago.

Scoop: Israeli military prepares for possibility Trump will strike Iran

The Israel Defense Forces have in recent weeks been instructed to prepare for the possibility that the U.S. will conduct a military strike against Iran before President Trump leaves office, senior Israeli officials tell me.

Why it matters: The Israeli government instructed the IDF to undertake the preparations not because of any intelligence or assessment that Trump will order such a strike, but because senior Israeli officials anticipate “a very sensitive period” ahead of Biden's inauguration on Jan. 20.

The IDF's preparedness measures relate to possible Iranian retaliation against Israel directly or through Iranian proxies in Syria, Gaza and Lebanon, the Israeli officials said.

Seems they've been drawing up a not so sub-rosa compact with other players in the region - Jarad Kushner's parting gift for the world.

How can you be at all 'shocked' by a lone killing?

This brutal fight has been playing out for many years. Starting with a popular 'Arab Spring' revolt in 2011, Bashir Assad, the Russians and the Iranians have slaughtered over 500,000 Syrians (among them our sold-out allies the Kurds). The Iranians have given the Houthis in Yemen drones which they fire into cities in Saudi Arabia. They have supplies Hezbollah with hundreds of thousands of missiles and millions of other armaments.

And the ruling Iranian ayatollahs have sworn on a daily basis to destroy their enemies (Sunnis, U.S., Israel etc.). Allowing these fanatics nuclear weapons would be a grave mistake.

Allowing Israel and Pakistan nukes was a mistake.

I disagree. Israel is alive today because they have defensive nuclear weapons. They have had them since 1967.

Iran's "elected' government' is composed of candidates hand-picked by the council of ayatollahs and all their decisions are subject to revision, reversal and sabotage by the religious councils. Plus, the entire country and its economy have been corrupted and taken over by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who pay absolutely no attention to the 'elected' parliament. Even the smallest amount of research shows that the 'elected' nature of Iranian government is a tragic farce at best and a polite facade over the real rulers.

Is Mossad into car bombs these days?

I thought they tried to be more subtle.

"Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed while in a car just outside the capital of Tehran by attackers using explosives and machine guns, the state media said"

Sounds more like an Eric Trump directed job.

NYT is reporting that “three officials said that Israel is behind the attack”.

I would imagine that Netanyahu is trying to make it impossible for Biden to reengage Iran on their nuclear program, and he probably had a friendly ear in Trump.

It’s another escalation, for sure. I’ll say again, Netanyahu himself is the biggest threat to Israel’s peace and security.

Too bad Pres. Trump pulled out of the nuclear deal.

Sounds like they were laying in wait along the road, and as he passed they detonated an explosive and then barraged the car with bullets.

It also sounds like the assassins didn't get away - their car, with three people killed inside, is reported to have been blown up further down the road.

Now they're saying the entire operation was executed remotely - detonation of hidden explosives followed by automatic gunfire from a remote-controlled machine gun.

So, basically, a roadside drone.
