“The right to freedom of opinion is of fundamental importance,” Steffen Seibert, Merkel’s chief spokesman, told reporters in Berlin on Monday, according to Reuters.

“Given that, the chancellor considers it problematic that the president’s accounts have been permanently suspended.”

The New York Times is under no obligation to publish every op-ed that passes its threshold. Why should Twitter?

Didn't Germany have a small problem with "freedom of opinion" getting a little out of hand in the 1930s/40s?

Germany has serious criminal penalties for hate speech, bordering on draconian.

What sort of penalties could we impose on the President? The current Gov't has been loathe to take any action. The only effective means seems to be from private industry.

Yeah...she's one to talk. Heil in public there, and well..don't.

Twitter is a bakery. Trump is a gay couple looking for a wedding cake. See how easy it is?

It is sort of amazing how all the press in the world is now distilled to Twitter, is it not?

Hurts like a bastid...

And Parler's problem is like someone with pre-existing conditions that can't find anyone willing to sell them insurance.

Dang, Germany seems awkwardly passionate about this.

Germany's freedom of speech laws are flipped from ours.

Here, the government is restrained from regulating non-commercial speech without a compelling public interest. Private entities (Corporations) can pretty much do whatever they want outside of the narrow field of regulation.

There, the government controls speech. Corporations are subject to penalties whenever they tread on anything that might be deemed dangerous to/by the government in broad categories. Censorship is the rule, not the exception, and it comes by government fiat.

From her point of view, this is perverse.

He can send me a text any time he wants.
He can go to another platform if he wants (in theory ... lulz)
He literally HAS A PRESS CONFERENCE ROOM IN HIS HOUSE.

Sedition is illegal.
Child pornography is illegal.

If we ban sites that promote child pornography, we should ban sites that promote sedition.
Goodbye Parler.

If we ban users who upload child pornography, we should ban users that promote sedition.
Goodbye Trump's Twitter account.

ROTFL! Exactly.

And we have rules that state you cannot yell 'Fire!' in a crowded movie theater.

Opinions and inciting insurrection are two very different things.
