In Historic 1st, U.S. Capitol Police Name Yogananda Pittman As Acting Chief

Not a job I’d want, but good for her

She has been with the force since April 2001 and was named acting chief on Friday, according to the U. S. Capitol Police (USCP) website. That came two days after pro-Trump extremists faced off and eventually overwhelmed security forces at the U.S. Capitol complex.

Pittman is the first woman and the first African American to lead the law enforcement agency, USCP confirms to NPR.

Time for her to shine!

Edit: if I have said something offensive, I did not know it.
I wish her all the best and hope she does a good job and makes all women proud.
I have no clue what else that phrase could mean.

I really do not.
If I have insulted anyone with a racial slur, god I am sorry.
I meant I wish her well
What else could that possibly mean?

Edit: apparently it could be interpreted as being a disparaging remark related to shoe shining.
I in no way intended it as such, but it wouldn’t make sense for me to delete the post, as it was quoted. sad smiley

Eh, to copypaste a handy quote from another recent thread, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Shine as in sun, or a lamp.

AFAIK - It's a slur usually aimed at a different group who, unless Ethiopian, aren't generally Black.

When I grew up, "shine" was a derogatory term for people who today are often called black or African American. I'm Jewish, so for me, it would have been like calling a Jewish person a H*e*be--not as bad as K*i*k*e, but pretty bad.*

And that's clearly not what the OP meant.

Where I grew up there were so many different racial/ethnic slurs bantered around in day to day conversation it would take a Mac to keep track of them all.

As a very (18) young man I was inveigled into selling stuff door to door, anytime we wrote a time payment agreement with a Black family - we were required to writ "toast" on the top of the contract before submission.

I saw this news today and was rather amazed by it. I never thought I'd see a female, let alone a female of color, in charge of CP under Trump. (CP is overseen by Exec Branch from all I've read, and this was one of the main problems that gave us last week.) Good luck and all best to her.

I've never heard of this phrase used in any other way than your original intention, which was a positive connotation. I went looking for more material on this, not a lot via the Great Oracle google.

I found this posting from 2004, however, that has unsubstantiated comments, but the discussion is interesting - [www.englishforums.com]

I guess I will never use that work for a non-white person again, if I can remember.

Congrats to Acting Chief Pittman, but how typical:

We just had a debacle of unprecedented scale, revealing astonishing weaknesses in our security apparatus. Let's hand it over to a Black woman - and good luck!!

(Reminds me of: big finance just destroyed our economy with a housing speculation bubble, leaving us in the biggest economic hole since the 1930s. Let's hand it over to a Black man - and good luck!)
