Reversing himself. Yup, he just got lower.

McConnell says he's undecided on whether to vote to convict Trump
[thehill.com]

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) sent a note to Republican colleagues Wednesday afternoon informing them that he remains undecided on whether to convict President Trump on an article of impeachment expected to be passed by the House.

“While the press has been full of speculation, I have not made a final decision on how I will vote and I intend to listen to the legal arguments when they are presented to the Senate,” McConnell wrote in a note to colleagues, an excerpt of which was made public by his office.

McConnell made his statement after The New York Time reported Tuesday that the GOP leader has told associates he believes Trump has committed impeachable offenses.

He’s waiting to see which way the wind is blowing, so he can sail in the direction most advantageous to his own interests.

I think he wants Schumer in charge of the trial. Gives him a lot of cover. Schumer will call for witnesses. That will seal Trump’s fate. Which McConnell wants.

He's waiting to follow Susan Collins lead.

McConnell has armed and camouflaged "patriots" to deal with at home too. Paint on his front door could be the least of his problems were he to lead or even support an impeachment.

There may be some good in this. Now that the senate vote is postponed until after Biden’s inauguration, it MIGHT force Trump to temper his behavior before he leaves office, realizing that McConnell could swing Republicans either way on the vote.

On the other hand, that would mean that Trump acts rationally, which he has never done.

I think Moscow Mitch has delayed the vote on the impeachment to increase chaos during Biden's first week after inauguration.

Funny and quite possibly true! I think Mitch will only vote to convict if there are 16+ other Republicans willing to do so. If he can turn this into an (attempted) expulsion of Trump from the GOP, particularly by banning him from running in 2024, I suspect he'll do it. Mitch wants, like most establishment Republicans, to be rid of him.
