Newly sworn-in Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) on Wednesday suggested delaying President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration until after the coronavirus pandemic was handled, even though the date is written into the Constitution.

During an interview with CBS affiliate WIAT after visiting a hospital, Tuberville questioned the timing of the inaugural ceremonies.

“We probably could have had a swearing-in and inauguration later after we got this virus behind us a little bit. Again, we’re talking about Washington, D.C.,” Tuberville said.

However, the date of Jan. 20 is not chosen by the president-elect’s team. It is mandated in the 20th Amendment of the Constitution, which states that “the terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January."

The outlet noted that it is unclear if Tuberville was aware of the amendment at the time of his interview. The Hill has reached out to his office for comment.

Tuberville was one of the Republicans who still objected to the certification of election results at a joint session of Congress last week after a group of President Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol in a deadly siege.

He needs to check his pocket Constitution. I'm sure he can get one, because every other Congressperson was waving theirs during the debates last week. Of course, maybe that's not as useful as it first sounds, because apparently it can be used to justify insurrection just as easily as it can be used to condemn it.

Great record so far. Every time that he has stated something as a "fact" or "statistic" to a reporter he has been wrong.

And he loves citing "stats." He seems to make them up as-needed to make his point, usually to downplay the severity of the coronavirus or to promote Trump's failed policies.

So two weeks ago it was a stolen election and today he's concerned about the pandemic? Riiiight.

Losing candidates like Jones should be out front on social media calling out those who bested them not out of sour grapes, but with legitimate concerns. For this, he could easily question why Tuberville is unaware that no one has the ability to change the Inauguration date, and to ask if such basic ignorance is acceptable.

If nothing else it'll let Democratic voters know this sort of thing won't be normalized. And if Republican voters don't question this, they'll question nothing.

Jones lost his public platform when he lost office, he can use his Twitter thread but that would be preaching to the converted.

I'm remembering when during his campaign, and someone was pestering him about his Christian bonafides, Kerry said, "I don't wear my religion on my sleeve." I thought wow, a Democrat not cowering on a 3rd-rail topic. Such honesty has not yet been rewarded in American politics.

However, if they kept up with it, one day it just might.
