He's not gonna testify, and they're not going to convict. I hope they pursue a 14th Amendment resolution to bar him from federal office as soon as this is over.

Let him fly to Moscow for a nice cup of Tea. As a useful idiot, his usefulness is waning.

Trump spent weeks claiming without proof that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, even as courts dismissed his team's allegations of voter fraud. The president on Jan. 6 urged his supporters to march to the Capitol to stop the certification of votes affirming Joe Biden as the next president. A mob overwhelmed law enforcement and stormed the Capitol a short time later.

I thought I read that they could only vote to ban him from future federal office if he was convicted first.

That's the impeachment route.

The 14th Amendment is another, separate route. Not sure who makes the determination that said Orange One was part of an insurrection against the government in that case.

It is not specified in the Amendment. The original target was confederates, but today the question is how to label someone. The speculation is that they might use a congressional resolution but it would be litigated at some point if Trump were to try to run for office.

We need it on the record that inciting a riot that threatens Congress and the VP is an impeachable offense.

We need this as a part of a formal Senate trial.

We need this to defend our Constitution.

If this is not a conviction, it's the top argument that the impeachment process outlined in the Constitution is not a viable protection for such incidents, and we need to explore alternative approaches.

We need the GOP to state one of the following:
1) the riot was terrible and we approve the prosecution of everyone involved to the highest extent allowable by law. Just start with this premise. I wish the Senate would run this as a resolution to get all Senators on the books.

Then:

2) The impeachment court is to determine how much of a role 45 played in the event.

Everything else is letting the GOP define the narrative.

If Trump is put on the stand, he will not be required to be under oath.
If he is put under oath, he will lie.
If he lies, he will NOT be charged with perjury.
It's just not what this country does with rich white Republicans.

What sekker said.

EVERY Republican should have to go on record saying that they are OK with the POTUS inciting a riot leading to the death of Capitol police officers.
