Breaking: J&J vaccine receives emergency use authorization

VERY good news. This is a regular, non-mRNA-based vaccine, apparently 100% effective at preventing hospitalization-related corona deaths, therefore maybe more useful for someone like myself who would be at greater risk for severe illness and death if I were to get the virus.

CDC director is saying she's concerned that the "leveling off" we're now seeing is the calm before the storm because of the variants...

Does anyone know what the current and predicted vaccination rates are in this country? If we can do a million a day, then we can be approaching herd immunity in the next 3 to 6 months.

... to my mind, the problems with these sorts of projections:

1) We don't really know how long the immunity from the vaccines lasts. It could be anywhere from 3-12 months or more (current estimates are saying at least 8 months, but we can't say that that's a uniform measurement).

2) The virus is mutating, and again we don't really know what that will do in regard to immunity with the currently available vaccines. Effectiveness might not really be 90-95%.

3) It also assumes no major snags in production, supply chain, etc. ... no major weather events, etc. In other words, it assumes everything goes right -- which as we've already seen ... isn't necessarily true.

4) 95% effectiveness still means that 5% of the population can potentially transmit the virus and/or suffer from it, and in this group, there's the possibility of further mutations beyond those we've already seen (see #2).

During my virtual doctor visit last week, I asked her opinion on the vaccines. I asked if any one was preferred over the other, or wait until the J + J single dose was ready. Her opinion, and I assume the overall opinion of the the facility she is in says to just get which ever one is available to me first. They are big behind the herd immunity concept. Single or double dose, just get it.

Personally, I'm hoping for 2 doses, as my company isn't requiring, but they are strongly suggesting to be vaccinated and are paying $25 per shot, so I hoping for two doses, LOL!

Yay! Virginia will hold J&J only vaccine events. They will let people know in advance that it is J&J only. So I finally pre registered. If others do not want this vaccine they simply decline an appointment and stay in line. I don’t know how many are like me and need this vaccine due to allergies, but we do not get any special access. Crossing my fingers I can get an appointment for the first shipment. I am in 1b.

I hear ya and after initially (very early) being resistant to the mRNA vaccines I had the same attitude, "give me the 94-95% good stuff!"

But the J&J vaccine is still very effective--can't get better than 100% effective against death--and is way, WAY more effective than the seasonal flu shot. I wouldn't turn it down. Besides, you could also get an mRNA booster in July after everyone else who wants a vaccine has gotten it.

Or you could be like me: try like crazy to get into Phase 3 trials when they first became available but none would accept me. Then spend 11 months being safe and waiting my turn for the production vaccine, only to get the god damn virus anyway. mad2 smiley
