A New York Times investigation published Saturday found that starting in September, with only two months to go to before the 2020 presidential election, the Trump campaign allegedly set up weekly recurring donations as the default for online donors.

Donors reportedly had to manually uncheck a box to opt out, and the notice of recurring donations was allegedly included only in a fine-print statement, according to the Times.

Just finished reading the NYT article. What a sleaze ball but then, we knew that.

Grifters gotta grift. I’m surprised so many in his cult asked for refunds.

I have a friend who was a big Trump supporter who told me today that he'd been caught in this and that finally he pulled the plug on Trump support when Wells Fargo told him why there were multiple charges to his account. He's pissed, and rightly so.

The Times article said that the Trump campaign and associated accounts issued 530,000 refunds for $64.3 million in the last months of 2020. Meanwhile the Biden campaign and associated accounts refunded 37,000 people for $5.6 million. Also, the Trumps used a for-profit vendor (WinRed) that kept the fees they charged for the original donation when they made refunds. It wasn't clear to me whether they refunded everything to the donor or everything minus their fees.

Meanwhile, my friend is on the search for a class-action suit accusing the Trump campaign of fraud. That will probably happen but they'll just have to get in line to sue Trump.
