Nearly 40,000 pack Texas Rangers game in sellout home opener amid pandemic
[thehill.com]

The Texas Rangers baseball team packed its 40,000-seat stadium for Monday’s home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The team announced a sellout crowd of 38,238 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, just under the stadium's official capacity, according to reports. That attendance doesn’t include complimentary tickets to the game.

Many fans were seen not wearing face masks or coverings or distancing from fellow visitors. The team said prior to the game that it would require face masks or coverings during the game except while eating or drinking.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) ended the state’s mask mandate last month, alongside capacity restrictions on businesses.

Most MLB teams are limiting in-person fan attendance to approximately 25 percent capacity, according to CBS Sports. The Houston Astros will be allowing 50 percent capacity at Minute Maid Park during the month of April.

President Biden last week criticized the Texas team for not placing limits on fans attending the home game, calling it a “mistake.”

"They should listen to Dr. [Anthony] Fauci, the scientists and the experts. But I think it's not responsible," Biden said during an interview with ESPN.

Following the home opener, the team will offer "distanced seating" sections for games played in April, which "will allow for more space between occupied seats," according to its website.

Unscientific survey:
- About 86 faces visible in that photo
- 39 appear to have a mask - 45%
- Only 24 wearing mask correctly - 28%

From an article in the Daily Beast interviewing a critical care nurse...

“It’s not like a guessing game,” Haacke told The Daily Beast on Sunday night. “We told you it’d go up after Halloween. We told you it’d go up after Thanksgiving. We told you it’d go up after Christmas. We told you it’d go up after New Year’s. And it’s going to go up after Easter.”

COVID-19 cases were already on the rise in recent days at the hospital in Eastern Maryland where he works in the ICU.

“Things are picking up again. It seems like it won’t stop.” he said. “I have two sets of husbands and wives that died in the last week and a half, right in beds next to each other. I think in both families, the children infected them.”

“The worst chest X-rays I’ve ever seen in my life,” Haacke said. “Some of these X-rays, with an untrained eye you wouldn’t know there’s a lung that exists in there.”

Other patients with white-out X-rays include a patient in his mid-thirties.

“He’s expected to not do well,” Haacke said.

Even if such a patient does survive, his lungs may be hopelessly scarred and damaged.

“At that point, you’re looking at a lung transplant,” Haacke said.

In general, Haacke noted, the new patients are “younger and sicker.”

He suspects one or more variants are responsible.

“I’m convinced there’s something going on,” he said. “We just don’t have the data to prove it right now.”

It’s a given that as the year rolls on, and more are vaccinated, and numbers begin to ebb, that the ones “still dying” will not make the daily news cycle much. It’ll be special features saying, “hey did you know Group X is dying disproportionally now?”

Yeah, unless the circulating virus (which still has plenty of apparently willing hosts) mutates again and renders the already-administered vaccines much less effective. You can't treat vaccines as reliable protection as long as enough virus is circulating and reproducing to generate dangerous variants.

What happened to Trump's demand to boycott MLB? Baseball already has an aging fan base that's shrinking annually, it can't really afford to kill off too many more paying customers.
