Man busted for multiple hate crimes in The Bronx

A man busted riding a bicycle against traffic in the Bronx early Saturday is responsible for a rash of anti-Jewish hate crime vandalism in Riverdale, police said.

Jordan Burnette, 29, a Riverdale resident, “faces numerous charges related to the many acts of vandalism as hate crimes that have taken place in this community,” said NYPD Deputy Inspector Jessica Corey, who leads the department’s Hate Crimes Task Force.

Burnette is suspected in rock-throwing vandalism that shattered windows April 24 and 25 at four Bronx synagogues: Young Israel of Riverdale on Henry Hudson Parkway, Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale on W. 250th St., Chabad Lubavitch of Riverdale on W. 246th St. and the Riverdale Jewish Center on Independence Ave.

After police busted Burnette at 3 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Delafield Ave. and W. 246th St., they learned he’d been captured earlier in the night on surveillance video at Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel a few blocks away, Corey said.

“When the officers investigated the synagogue’s parking lot, they found siddurim, which are religious prayer books, that were strewn on the ground,” said Corey.

“In addition, they discovered an open shed that contained bicycles,” she added. Police showed the synagogue caretaker a picture of the bike Burnette was caught riding — and the caretaker confirmed that the bike came from the shed, said police.

Burnette was to be charged with burglary as a hate crime and other counts, Corey said.

As he was led out of the 50th Precinct stationhouse in Riverdale on Saturday night, Corey was asked what he had against synagogues.

“I believe in Jesus,” he said. “Jesus is the real messiah. That’s all I know. I didn’t throw any rocks.”

NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller credited the arrest to a wide-ranging police effort.

Yes, they can’t seem to follow traffic laws. Although the bike belonged to a synagogue so maybe it rides from right to left.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

Sikh man recounts vicious hate-fueled Brooklyn hammer attack; police release surveillance pictures of suspect
[www.nydailynews.com]

A Sikh man who was the victim of a vicious hammer attack in Brooklyn spoke out Saturday about the crime, saying his assailant was fueled by racial hatred.

Sumit Ahluwalia, 32, of Astoria, described the violent incident during a “Stop Hate Crime” event at Phil “Scooter” Rizzuto Park in South Richmond Hill, Queens, that was attended by state lawmakers and local advocates.

Ahluwalia said the man assaulted him April 26 at his workplace, the Quality Inn at 120 Osborn St. in Brownsville.

“It was about 8 a.m. A Black guy came into the lobby of the hotel and started shouting,” Ahluwalia recounted. “The front desk lady asked him, ‘Sir, do you need help?’”

Ahluwalia said he stepped into the lobby to speak with the man and to seek the hotel security guard.

At that point, the assailant “started running towards me, very fast, and he put his hand in the pocket — I thought, ‘He’s pulling out a gun.’”

Ahluwalia said he pleaded with the man, “What happened? You’re my brother.” But the assailant shot back: “You’re not the same skin,” Ahluwalia said.

The man “banged on my head with the hammer so hard,” Ahluwalia recounted. He said the assailant then screamed, “I don’t like you,” and fled.

“After that, like, for some time I couldn’t feel what happened with me,” he said, adding he was eventually taken to an emergency room.

“I couldn’t sleep. I had a big bump on my head,” he said. “I could fall — feeling dizziness, and the next morning I went to the doctor.”

He said five days later, he still felt anxious and fearful.

“I didn’t do anything… I don’t deserve this,” he lamented. “I’m a hardworking guy, wake up in the morning 6 a.m. and go home at 7 p.m.”

Singh gave reporters surveillance video showing some of the incident. Police on Saturday released pictures of the suspect in the case, who was still being sought.

Not enough Buddhists in France to outrage?

Why are Buddhist monks attacking Muslims?
