The origin story of the Big Lie begins in an airplane hanger in Texas

The enduring myth that the 2020 election was rigged was not one claim by one person. It was many claims stacked one atop the other, repeated by a phalanx of Trump allies. This is the previously unreported origin story of a core set of those claims, ideas that were advanced not by renowned experts or by insiders who had knowledge of flawed voting systems but by Ramsland and fellow conservative activists as they pushed a fledgling company, Allied Security Operations Group, into a quixotic attempt to find evidence of widespread fraud where none existed.

The making of a myth
Russell J. Ramsland Jr. sold everything from Tex-Mex food to light-therapy technology. Then he sold the story that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.

It doesn't really matter where conspiracy theories come from, but if you're curious there it is.

Summary:
TX Republicans were smarting over inroads Dems made in the 2018 midterms. A crackpot began asserting fraud and went fishing for a losing candidate who would challenge their loss, thereby buying into what he was selling. That created momentum that festered throughout 2019 and gained steam the following year.

At Trump's January 6 Capitol rally the president was amplifying lies directly tied to ideas first spoken back in the Texas airplane hangar 2+ years prior.

Interesting story.

Yet another morally vacant Harvard MBA from that era screwing up the country to enrich themselves.

“ Interesting story. “

Yes. But “The Big Lie” began in the last presidential election when Trump started blathering on millions of illegal votes.

I think an important factor in figuring out the etiology of Trump gaslighting The Big Lie is that Trump has longstanding history of calling elections 'rigged' if he doesn’t like the results:

Quote

On election night in 2012, when President Barack Obama was reelected, Trump said that the election was a "total sham" and a "travesty," while also making the claim that the United States is "not a democracy" after Obama secured his victory.

Trump even wrote on Twitter, "We can't let this happen. We should march on Washington and stop this travesty. Our nation is totally divided!"

When he ran to become the Republican Party nominee in 2016, he attempted to cast doubt on the election process. Trump said he did not lose the Iowa caucuses in 2016 to then candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, because he "stole it."

"Ted Cruz didn't win Iowa, he stole it. That is why all of the polls were so wrong and why he got far more votes than anticipated. Bad!" Trump wrote on Twitter at the time.

He also wrote, "Based on the fraud committed by Senator Ted Cruz during the Iowa Caucus, either a new election should take place or Cruz results nullified."

Cruz was the clear victor for the Republican Iowa caucus in 2016, as he defeated Trump by three percentage points.

In October 2016, just weeks before the general election, Trump wanted to cast doubt on the results by tweeting, "The election is absolutely being rigged by the dishonest and distorted media pushing Crooked Hillary - but also at many polling places - SAD," without providing any evidence for the claim.

Even after the election ended and it was clear that Clinton had lost and conceded victory to Trump, the president didn't stop lamenting over the election he had won. He quickly made the claim that he also won the popular vote over Clinton, which is something that did not happen.

"In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally," said Trump.

I think the origin story of The Big Lie is a complicated one, but at the heart of it is a man whose self-image cannot accept "losing" and that has a compulsion to blame someone and something else whenever something goes wrong. A man for whom lying is second nature (first nature?).

“ a man whose self-image cannot accept "losing" and that has a compulsion to blame someone and something else “

Combined with countless numbers of sycophants who shamelessly parrot and amplify his B.S.

Trump is obviously the best losing candidate to perpetuate the stolen-election lie. As it relates to Ramsland's efforts however, that traction was amped up by those in Trump's orbit such that it spilled over into the state elections. Ramsland marketed it and I think it's fair to say Trump would not have tackled it to the extent that he did if he didn't have all that machinery behind him.

Yeah, Trump and his cronies were looking for anything to buttress their contention that Trump lost the election due to fraud and this huckster happened to have packaged some conspiracy theories about voting machines and the dead Chavez (Venezuela) and assorted other nonsense for the state elections you mention. So this is not really as much the origin of The Big Lie as it's the story of some of the main ridiculous conspiracy stories that Trump and his boosters latched onto when trying to make The Big Lie plausible to his followers.
