Michigan state Rep. Matt Maddock and his wife, Michigan Republican Party co-chair Meshawn Maddock, have repeatedly been called out by fact-checking journalists for promoting baseless claims of widespread voter fraud and falsely suggesting that covid-19 is comparable to the flu.

Now, the Republican lawmaker wants to create new obstacles for fact-checkers who might challenge politicians over unsubstantiated claims.

... Maddock’s bill, the Fact Checker Registration Act, was introduced Tuesday and would require fact-checkers to register with the state and insure themselves with $1 million fidelity bonds. Any fact-checker who did not register with the state could face a $1,000 per day fine. The proposed legislation would also allow anyone to sue a fact-checker over “any wrongful conduct that is a violation of the laws of this state.”

This guy, who went to the “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington on Jan 6 also thinks that fact-checkers contradict conservatives more than progressives (...hmm...wonder why that is).

Okay, let’s make a deal: if fact checkers need to post a $1M bond, then so do gun owners, to be forfeited if their gun is used in any crime by anyone; any victims of said gun get to sue the person that bought it. $1K per day fine if you don’t comply with it all.

M’Kay? Deal?

Maybe politicians should also be required to enroll.

This, if we're going to do wishful thinking.

If people who check the speeches for factualness have to post a bond, the people who make the speeches should do so.

At the juncture, accountability for making false statements seems pretty low.

Have the Maddocks offered any evidence of alleged checked facts being incorrect or lies or any other abuses of opposition's claimed checked facts etc.?

Have they objectively proven any of them are wrong?

I'm guessing no, but that's just a guess.

I'd love to see the "fact checkers" -- which seems to be a term for a reporter -- double down on these folks and ask them repeatedly about their latest lies. Every time one of them appears in a news conference, ask them why they are afraid of having their statements checked.

The proposed rules are of course unconstitutional on their face, so perhaps the reporters could ask them to recite the part of the Constitution which enables such legislation, and might even ask them to recite the first amendment.

This sounds like a tactic used by third world autocrats, and other repressive governments around the world.
Very Putin-like.
