Ipsos/ReutersPoll: The Big Lie Over half of Republicans believe Donald Trump is the actual President of the United States.

Topline Findings Washington, DC, May 21, 2021 -Former President Donald Trump’s stronghold over the Republican party remains. His refusal to concede the 2020 election and calls of widespread fraud have raised doubts about the integrity of its results among his Republican base.

Consequently, 56% of Republicans believe the election was rigged or the result of illegal voting, and 53% think Donald Trump is the actual President, not Joe Biden. Only 30% of Republicans feel confident that absentee or mail-in ballots were accurately counted, compared to 86% of Democrats and 55% of independents.

As a result, 87% of Republicans believe it is important that the government place new limits on voting to protect elections from fraud. Finally, 63% percent of Republicans think Donald Trump should run for President again in 2024, compared to only 8% of Democrats and 23% of independents.

This does not surprise me in the slightest. It's the only way they can justify their support of the insurrection.

Those numbers are meaningless.

Until compared to 2016 or earlier elections.

Especially since 56 % of Republicans would represent less than 8 % of US population.

I think I remember reading a poll at the beginning of the month that said that 70% of Republicans believed that Biden didn't win the election. If so, maybe this poll could be evidence of a loss of support for The Big Lie. Need more data I guess, but I hope that's the trend.

It will be interesting to see the “results” of Republican recounts in a number of red states. Whatever conclusions they reach, you can bet they aren’t going to admit that they were wrong. They’ll lie in order to make sure the big lie will continue. Not to belabor the obvious, but Republicans decided that truth is whatever they want it to be a long time ago. After all, they are in service to a higher ideal than truth.

69% of Republicans do not believe in Climate Change.

That 47% that think President Biden is the President is a step up!

From Heather Cox Richardson:

A new Gallup poll today finds that 53% of Republicans think that Trump won the 2020 election. But only 26% of Americans identify as Republicans. Journalist Richard Hine crunched the numbers and notes that those percentages boil down to about 14% of Americans who think Trump is still president.

To me, the question isn't whether Republicans say they believe the Big Lie. The question is whether or not they really do, or they're just saying they do. While the former is possible because some of them are truly brainwashed, the latter is also quite likely for a variety of reasons-- hypocrisy is really embedded into their party, and cognitive dissonance has become an ingrained habit.

There certainly are some people who don't believe Biden won. They surround themselves with like-minded people so they don't personally know anyone who voted for Biden. And then in their small, FNC/NewsMax/OAN distorted version of reality, they don't believe Biden could have possibly gotten more legitimate votes than Cheetoface.

Most important is how far they will go in acting on this misinformation. If they still vote Republican, then their true belief doesn't really matter.

The brainwashed will likely never be convinced otherwise, and will therefore go all the way acting on the misinformation. The only slight hope is that when it becomes politically convenient and advantageous to do so, the ones who are just saying they believe the Big Lie (but actually don't) will finally have the courage to tell the truth. Of course, by that point, a lot of damage will have been (and has been) done. In the meantime, Dump still controls their party and they're either all too afraid or willing to serve as collaborators. Of course, some would say it's not fear: [www.washingtonpost.com]
