In a packed hearing room at the Ohio Statehouse, Republican lawmakers gave the microphone to a known conspiracy theorist who has spread misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines.

Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, a physician licensed in Ohio and author of "Saying No to Vaccines," shared her views, promoted her credentials and fielded questions for more than 45 minutes during a House Health Committee hearing on House Bill 248.

"I'm sure you've seen the pictures all over the internet of people who have had these shots and now they're magnetized," Tenpenny, of Middleburg Heights in Cuyahoga County, said. "You can put a key on their forehead, it sticks. You can put spoons and forks all over and they can stick because now we think there is a metal piece to that."

Later, there was some show-and-tell.

Joanna Overholt, a registered nurse from Strongsville, defended Tenpenny's testimony and placed a key and a hairpin against her chest and neck.

"Explain to me why the key sticks to me. It sticks to my neck too. So, yeah, if somebody could explain this, that would be great," she said as the key failed to stick to her neck.

If brass keys are sticking, it's probably slime, not magnetism

I have been able to stick spoons to my face since I was in the 4th grade. It must have been from the smallpox vaccines we were given. I was concerned that the Covid19 vaccine would diminish the magnetic effect however it only made it stronger. The most noticeable problem has been when standing near a metal door my head will get pulled to the door, I try to pull away and then my head is pulled into the door. This continued and now I have brain damage similar to Ms Tenpenny. I am hoping to move South of the Equator so the Earth's magnetic field will reverse the effect and live a life understanding the value of common sense.

It must be really, really easy to get and keep a medical license in Ohio.

In training, an osteopath (DO) is the same as an allopath (MD) in this day and age - except that DO’s get additional training in osteopathic techniques. Osteopaths often do their residencies at allopathic hospitals.

Yes and Yes

This Dr Tenpenny is a real doctor and also a real crank. She has been pounding the anti-vaccine line for years and has been written up repeatedly by David Gorski at the Respectful Insolence blog. You can find numerous articles that debunk her positions. But now, she seems to have really gone over the edge. Usually the anti-vax people roll out a series of claims that have been debunked many times, but sometimes at least have some grounding in some badly done study. For example, there was one paper about autism and vaccination long ago that had some questionable statistics based on a very small data set, but had one cohort who suggested some correlation between getting vaccines and having autism. At least that is how the anti-vax people tried to play up the study. Since then, there have been something in excess of ten million children studied and the result is a big fat zero correlation between vaccination and autism. But the weirdos continue to flog the study and one guy who claimed a coverup even though there wasn't.

When the Covid pandemic reached the US, the anti vaccine people realized that if we got a vaccine, everybody would want it, and so they went to town on making up nonsensical claims. The skeptics have had to invest hundreds of hours to debunk all that nonsense.

Anyway, Tenpenny comes from that crowd and to refer to them as disingenuous would be an understatement.

No, but I would NOT seek out any doctor, DO or MD, not specifically trained and active in the study of infectious diseases, their spread, treatment and prevention for the most authoritative information on those issues; let alone set national, emergency health policy during a worldwide pandemic.

The comment about a metal attached to the protein in the vaccine got my attention, so I was curious and looked it up. Unless she was thinking thimerosal (which these vaccines DON'T contain), I can't figure out what the heck she was talking about.

Just to be snooty: in her Wikipedia page she is said to have graduated from osteopath school in 1984. In 1986, she was apparently named director of the emergency department at a hospital in Findlay OH (pop ~40k).

So, she’s an emergency medicine specialist? Well, kinda yes and kinda no. There are no 2 year residencies in ER medicine. Unless she was named as director while she was still completing a residency (in another town- Findlay is prolly too small to host a residency program), she probably didn’t actually complete a residency.

Which is legal. Most state medical boards (including OH) ask for a minimum of a year of internship before licensure, and then you can practice medicine if you can find someplace that is desperate enough to hire you, or open your own office. But almost everyone completes a residency of one sort or another. Looks like she didn’t.

Imagine reading that and deciding this is an appropriate person to testify about vaccines. Her fraud was exposed years ago, on an international stage. Shame on the dummy who gave her this platform.

She's a Pandemic Profiteer, and before that an Anti-vax Profiteer. Not a practicing physician. She makes money teaching people how to spread disinformation. Even got a PPP loan.
