Florida ‘Red Scare’ escalates; students now required to disclose political beliefs

For example, the law does not stop with its “loyalty oath”-like interrogations of teachers’ political stances. Students in Florida schools will now also be required to register their individual political beliefs and opinions with authorities. Gov. Ron DeSantis claims the “survey” of students will be used “to monitor intellectual diversity” on Florida’s campuses. The governor doesn’t specify whether the idea is to promote diversity or stamp it out. However, his other statements bemoaning “liberal ideology” among students and complaining that schools have become “socialism factories” give a hint as to his true motivation. Simply put, the government of Florida wants to suppress those political opinions with which the Republican Party does not agree. The First Amendment is under attack.

There is already a discussion of extending it to public school teachers next year.

skimming the bill, I couldn't find any discussion about 'loyalty oaths' or anything that sounds like registering 'political beliefs and opinions with authorities'.

Can anyone find the text in the bill somewhere? - I fall asleep when I try reading legalese.

Great. Hopefully the courts will shoot this thing down and be done with it for a little while. It’ll never be over with these fascist wannabe types unless they are out of power.

He’s a dangerous man.

Oops, sorry. I forgot about the link in the article; I found it in a Google search. I'm not sure what you mean by - "Can anyone find the text in the bill somewhere?" - if you already looked through it.

I think what he is saying is that he read the text of the bill and didn't find supporting evidence or language that would lead him to the conclusion that what is stated in the subject line is true.

I haven't read it and have no idea what it says.

Oh yeah, I should have realized that - text relating to "loyalty oaths" and such. Major duh on my part. Sorry Hal.

Lies, damn lies, and statistics

Apologies to the anonymous forum member affected by my previous sig pic. It was my personal pic of a country expressing great grief as their leader, one of the most recognized people in the world, lay on his deathbed 8 years ago, days before he died. Like a naif, I did not realize it was offensively political, I considered it an expression of deep emotion and a reminder of the mortal coil's nature; that we all, great and small, can only hope to make a difference in our short time here, no matter the personal cost.

I'll post another pic from my work in South Africa that is, hopefully, apolitical.

Florida Statute 876.05 already requires all state employees to sign a loyalty oath that reads:

Quote

I, _____________________________ a citizen of the State of Florida and of the United States of America, and being employed by or an officer of [state, county, city, school office] and a recipient of public funds as such employee or officer, do hereby solemnly swear or affirm that I will support the Constitution of the United States and of the State of Florida.

The legislature did make is one exemption to the requirement -- elected officials.
