“After nearly two years of wrangling, the country’s three major drug distributors and a pharmaceutical giant have reached a $26 billion deal with states that would release some of the biggest companies in the industry from all legal liability in the opioid epidemic, a decades-long public health crisis that has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans.

The agreement, announced Wednesday afternoon by a bipartisan group of state attorneys general, lays the framework for billions of dollars to begin flowing into communities across the country for addiction treatment, prevention services and other steep expenses from the epidemic.”

I’ll believe it when I see it. The tobacco settlement often went into a state’s general fund rather than fund anti-smoking efforts. It did under Gov. Pawlenty (R) in Minnesota.

A settlement is not a victory. Hundreds of thousands of people died. Nobody at the root cause will go to jail. And don't forget that the Sackler family hid much of their worth with accounting maneuvers and declared bankruptcy so they don't have to pay. And got personal immunity.

Don't worry, plenty of people will go to jail. Just not the ones who made the big money.

They keep marketing them because they are useful and there are sometimes no alternatives. The difference is that everyone will know the dangers of them as well as how to properly prescribe and administer them in a safe manner.

Same as with Tobacco....not that this stopped anyone from using them, but at least they knew they what they were getting into.
