The forum needs a "vaccuous" emoji.

It is what it is.

I did not compute: get to the airport and we will fly you out. No escorts from home to airport, Joe. That is the problem. What if you live in another portion of Afghanistan ? Good luck Americans. Maybe the guys with the guns will give you a FREE pass. RollingEyesSmiley5

This is the problem of announcing a pullout without simultaneously negotiating a surrender on honorable terms. Did anybody really expect the former government to stay in power? And knowing that there was a good probability that the Taliban would take over, there should have been an agreement that everybody who wants to leave gets to leave.

Now that the Taliban are a national government, perhaps they will start to act more like one than like an insurrection.

And now, instead of Toyota HiLux pickups with welded roll-bars and water pipe tubing to hold on to, they have up-armored HUMVEEs with M2 turrets just waiting for them to mount your heavy guns on, or to pop up through and light off an AT4 or RPG.

Good Job not destroying everything before you took off. This applies to both US and the local Afghanis we supported. I'm sure there were some grenades lying around RollingEyesSmiley5

A homewrecker grenade in the cab, and the truck is scrap.

Agreed.

Agreed, as well.

I don't understand why all that kit was left intact?

Were they leaving for use by the Afghan military?

And thought it wouldn't be wrested from them, if not abandoned by them?

I can see it being left for the local military, but why didn't THEY destroy them? Leaving them intact and fleeing/surrendering will make it FAR worse in the future.

I don't think we should, or can, assume all or most of that equipment that the Taliban now has, was NOT what had been given to the Afghan "Army" and simply left behind when that "army" dissolved.

I suspect that the members of the Afghan "Army" were concerned with their "future" over the immediate hours and days. The quicker they could vanish into the general population the better/safer.

This is likely to be at least part of the explanation - and could be the largest part. It could also be that when the Taliban gave money and assurances of no reprisals against military commanders that made deals for "surrender" that part of the deals was that the military equipment would be left intact.

Don’t underestimate what can be achieved without a steady supply of parts. I’m reminded of the cars in Cuba.

Do we sell this stuff to Pakistan? Because they are the Taliban's sugar daddies. That could be a source of parts.

scavenge some for parts. Order basic stuff online. Seriously. I kid you not. Rock Auto sells stuff for the older H1 model. Easy to have stuff shipped worldwide. Basic maintenance stuff is likely the same, or could be adapted.

Hey, I'm not bashing Biden per se. It's just that this has been a @#$%& show.
