Apathetic voters could hand California recall to Republicans: ‘Folks seem unaware’

Mr Elder is not a nice man...

Quote

The dynamics of the race are in part due to California’s peculiar recall system. The ballot asks two questions. First, should the governor be recalled? And if so, who should be governor? If more than 50% vote yes on the first question, the candidate with the most votes on question two becomes governor. That means that if 49.9% of voters support Newsom’s staying in office, he could be replaced by a candidate earning far fewer votes, such as the Republican frontrunner and rightwing radio host Larry Elder, who leads the polls among replacement candidates with just 18% support.

“They’re hoping that Democrats are just not interested enough,” said James Lance Taylor, a political scientist at the University of San Francisco, of the crowded Republican field. “That not enough Democrats will return the ballots, allowing Elder to sneak in the back door and become governor of California.”

Democrats up and down the state are growing increasingly nervous about that possibility.

“I’m very concerned by the close poll numbers and very concerned with the fact that folks seem distracted or unaware,” said Sydney Kamlager, a Democratic state senator and vice-chair of the California legislative Black caucus who has been urging constituents to vote against the recall.

So if 49.9% of voters approve of the present governor but that's less than 50%, then a person with less than 20% of the vote can take his place. That's a really stupid system.

Elder is actually nice enough when you talk to him on the radio. It's his politics that are the problem.

I think Californians will turn up and take care of this. I am seeing "vote no" stuff everywhere.

While there is a 'no' campaign ramping up, the Trumpers are quite motivated. Masks, vaccines, screwing the libs. The fear is that they will show up, while the rest of us ignore it.

While Biden won Cali by 5m votes, Trump still got 6m here. Which is more than a bunch of red states put together.

The good news is that the state mailed a ballot to every voter. We have to hope that enough will return it to save Newsom.

… when "Pocahontas" (Elizabeth Warren) comes over the air just about every hour to tell everyone in Cali what to do, it tends to rile up the Trumpsters and their ilk who are behind this big time. They are guaranteed to get out the vote. It'd be nice if those commercials went away. They're counter-productive. But they're all over. Bad judgment from the governor - which is just another nail the coffin and further justification for booting Newsom as far as Trumpsters are concerned.

What's asinine about the system is that there's a perfectly good Lt. Governor who could easily take over if the vote is no. Worked for N.Y.

… showing almost no change in the 50-50 polling so far. Our ballots are still sitting on the table … millions of others are, too.

It is beyond ridiculous and seems designed to provide a Republican with almost no support with a free ticket to taking over the governorship. The Repubs basically found a major flaw in the recall process and are exploiting it to counter the will of the citizenry, just like they always do. Really it should have been structured as an even playing field with Newsom against everybody else and then a runoff if nobody received a majority...either that or install the lieutenant governor and call it a day.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

What ought to be a slam dunk for Newsom has turned into a real election. Poll numbers are spurring right wing voters to the extent that we're beginning to see some ballot tampering.

Neighborhood apps in the San Fernando Valley are reporting what seem to be an organized effort to steal ballots from apartment mailboxes. I regarded the first few reports as just reflecting a degree of paranoia and then there was this from the N-OS X-tasy part of town.

If they think this thing is close enough that stealing ballots will swing it, we could be in real trouble.

PS: Agree that this particular recall system is deranged.

I feel like this is the political equivalent of a nice person that is not nice to the waitress is not a nice person.

Radio Personality is all that need be known about the asshat Elder.

Why that qualifies him for anything besides rabble-rousing and ratings should be at the forefront of any campaign ad.
