Walensky: Schools not following CDC guidance seeing 'large-scale' outbreaks
[thehill.com]

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky called on schools that are not following guidance to “do the right thing” and implement COVID-19 precautions, like masking, to avoid outbreaks and protect children from the virus.

"In our outbreak investigations, large-scale quarantines or large number of cases are generally occurring in schools, because schools are not following our guidance, particularly our recommendations for teachers as well as students aged 12 and over to be vaccinated and for everyone right now to be masked," Walensky said during a Friday briefing.

“I want to strongly appeal to those districts who have not implemented prevention strategies and encourage them to do the right thing to protect the children under their care,” Walensky said. “We know these multi-layered mitigation strategies work, and thanks to the American Rescue Plan schools have the resources to implement these strategies.”

The CDC director said studies have shown prevention strategies, including masking, social distancing, testing, ventilation and vaccination, help to thwart COVID-19 spread in schools. She cited a CDC study released Friday that found the case rates among children in schools with these protections were 3.4 times lower during the winter peak compared with rates in the community.

“Schools should implement as many of these prevention layers as possible simultaneously,” she said. “And this serves to protect our children, even if there are inevitable breaches in any single protection layer.”

We need a safe and effective vaccine for all school age children. We may be close. Of course the disinformation campaign will continue, but we need to make it available as soon as possible. Probably it will be a lower dose of the Pfizer or Moderna.

An aside: One local reporter interviewed members of a group here in the Los Angeles area who have a fairly low dose rate. A number of them were afraid that the disease could be passed from a vaccinated person to someone else. This is the old "shedding" nonsense that the anti-vaxxers have been spreading, along with the rest of their lies. It is a lie.

It is a half truth, not a lie. Though a half truth can be the most effective sort of FUD. At this point they are seeing some vaccinated individuals getting infected with the virus afterwards and at levels that are shedding significant amounts. The advantage to the vaccinated is that they are less likely to get an infection in the first place, and second if they do get infected they are less likely to have a serious case.

However getting the vaccine will not make them infectious at all.

This happened on CA last spring, and the CDC released its report this week.

One unmasked, unvaxxed teacher infected 27 people, including kids many rows back from her.

How any governor or school official could know this data and oppose masks is a big mystery. They simply don't care about children's health, or teacher's.

On May 25, 2021, the Marin County Department of Public Health (MCPH) was notified by an elementary school that on May 23, an unvaccinated teacher had reported receiving a positive test result for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The teacher reported becoming symptomatic on May 19, but continued to work for 2 days before receiving a test on May 21. On occasion during this time, the teacher read aloud unmasked to the class despite school requirements to mask while indoors. Beginning May 23, additional cases of COVID-19 were reported among other staff members, students, parents, and siblings connected to the school. To characterize the outbreak, on May 26, MCPH initiated case investigation and contact tracing that included whole genome sequencing (WGS) of available specimens. A total of 27 cases were identified, including that of the teacher. During May 23–26, among the teacher’s 24 students, 22 students, all ineligible for vaccination because of age, received testing for SARS-CoV-2; 12 received positive test results. The attack rate in the two rows seated closest to the teacher’s desk was 80% (eight of 10) and was 21% (three of 14) in the three back rows (Fisher’s exact test; p = 0.036). During May 24–June 1, six of 18 students in a separate grade at the school, all also too young for vaccination, received positive SARS-CoV-2 test results. Eight additional cases were also identified, all in parents and siblings of students in these two grades. Among these additional cases, three were in persons fully vaccinated in accordance with CDC recommendations (1). Among the 27 total cases, 22 (81%) persons reported symptoms; the most frequently reported symptoms were fever (41%), cough (33%), headache (26%), and sore throat (26%). WGS of all 18 available specimens identified the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant. Vaccines are effective against the Delta variant (2), but risk of transmission remains elevated among unvaccinated persons in schools without strict adherence to prevention strategies. In addition to vaccination for eligible persons, strict adherence to nonpharmaceutical prevention strategies, including masking, routine testing, facility ventilation, and staying home when symptomatic, are important to ensure safe in-person learning in schools (3).

FFS.

Was that teacher incredibly stupid, or was there some malice involved.

The reason negligence is on the law books as a possible criminal or civil charge. Too stupid to follow rules is not a defense.
