RFK assassin Sirhan Sirhan granted parole

Sirhan Sirhan, the man convicted of assassinating Robert F. Kennedy at a Los Angeles hotel more than 50 years ago, was recommended for release by a California parole board Friday, the first step toward making him a free man.

The move sparks a 90-day review period by parole staff and the eventual release of the 77-year-old can be blocked by the governor of California

The board granted his release Friday, in part, after receiving letters of support from two members of the slain senator's family, including his son, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The release also came without opposition from Los Angeles County prosecutors, who are barred from fighting release at parole hearings under a policy enacted by Dist. Atty. George Gascón.

Unlikely that the governor will OK the release. I remember seeing the aftermath on television.

Subject line is more than a little misleading. "Recommended for parole" and "granted parole" are two very different things.

Bobby couilda/woulda/shoulda saved us from "Tricky" Dick Nixon....

No clue what Gavin's gonna do, but he was barely a few months old when Sirhan ruined the world, so doubtful he has any vivid memories of that fateful event.

If he thinks it will get him an extra vote, he will probably deny. He is a politician, first and foremost.

90 days, so what he might do - if he's still governor - could well be determined by the margin by which he stays in office. If it's razor thin SS will probably die in prison, should he beat back the recall or exceed expectations SS could still die in prison but probably won't.

Doesn't much matter whether he stays or gets out. He'll still be the responsibility of us taxpayers for whatever remains of his worthless life. Hopefully, if he does get out, he'll leave the far southwest corner…

Sorry, this mutt killed a good man.

As do I.

I'm not ok with this.

When Sirhan killed RFK, he gave up his right to life. Upon lawful conviction in a court of law, his life is subject to what the people of California decide. He has no fundamental right to get out of prison. If he is released, it would be an act of mercy. The argument as to whether he is no longer a danger to the public strikes me as irrelevant -- if we think he is still a danger, we would not release him in any case, but if he is not a danger (a probability anyway) we have no obligation to release him.

What boggles my mind is that Kennedy's son isn't sure that Sirhan did it.

‘No longer a threat to the public’.

My gut reaction, which I’m inclined to go with, is that the murder he committed harmed this country in a way that has had an incredible ripple effect through to this very day. With that ongoing harm, I see no service to justice in allowing him parole.

Another sibling, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an anti-violence advocate, wrote a letter supporting Sirhan’s parole.
Yeah, he's the anti-vax loonie.

Unless he's deported, w/ or w/o parole he'll still be on our payroll....

Vote for immediate reinstatement of special circumstance death penalty just for him, to put a fitting end to this horrible chapter in our country's history.
