A judge asked a mother if she got the coronavirus vaccine. She said no, and he revoked custody of her son.

I’ve got to say, this one is a bit of a stretch even for me because the mother had sought medical advice. Still, the son is COVID45 safer with his father.

When Rebecca Firlit joined a virtual court hearing with her ex-husband earlier this month, the Chicago mother expected the proceedings to focus on child support.

But the judge had other plans.

“One of the first things he asked me … was whether or not I was vaccinated,” Firlit, 39, told the Chicago Sun-Times.
She was not, she said, explaining that she has had “adverse reactions to vaccines in the past” and that a doctor advised her against getting inoculated against the coronavirus.

“It poses a risk,” she added.

Cook County Judge James Shapiro then made what the parents’ attorneys called an unprecedented decision: He said the mother could not see her 11-year-old son until she got a coronavirus vaccine.
The child’s father is vaccinated, the Sun-Times reported.

Unless there were other circumstances involved (and I want to think there are) - that is overreach.

Her attorney is smart for focusing on just the vaccination aspect.
His attorney is smart for keeping his mouth shut.

Assume her story of vaccine reaction is true. I would still be more comfortable with dad having custody because mom could wind up on a vent or dead. I’m guessing this is not the only criteria the judge used to decide who is the fit parent. It’s difficult for mothers to lose custody. So there must be something else in her background indicating she should not be taking care of her child.

Or maybe the judge just got tired of watching the death toll climb and decided to use his position to make a point. Once mom gets fully vaccinated, she’ll probably regain custody.

I honestly doubt we are getting the whole story.

It can't be a whole story. I seriously doubt a judge would rule that way solely on the vaccination status of one of the parents.

now, if it was reversed and a Trump appointed judge ruled a vaccinated parent could not visit their child, I might actually believe that.

That just shows how messed up this country is right now.

CHICAGO — An Illinois judge has reversed a ruling to bar a divorced mother from seeing her 11-year-old son because she isn't vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Cook County Judge James' Shapiro issued an order Monday vacating his Aug. 10 decision, though he offered no explanation.

Rebecca Firlit's lawyer has said the judge, and not Firlit's ex-husband, raised the issue during a child support hearing for the former couple who share custody of the boy.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Sunday that Shapiro asked the mother if she was vaccinated. When she said no, the judge withdrew her rights to see the boy until she gets vaccinated.

Firlit said she has had adverse reactions to vaccinations and that her doctor advised her not to get a coronavirus shot.

Maybe the judge was fed up, as opined above, and thought better of it later, maybe it was a shock and awe approach.

But this will be huge news again, if Mom gets COVID45*.

I assume the dad is vaccinated?

'I had a bad reaction' might be tough to disprove.

Yeah, the judge's ruling was a stretch, but I can understand why he might have made it.

She’s a risk to her son if unvaccinated. It’s not more complicated than that, nor does it matter if she is lying or being truthful. Everything else is an assumption she would not get sick and subsequently not endanger the child.

These days those are incredibly weak assumptions.

If true, it seems it would be easy to get a doctor to vouch for it.

This assumes she sought medical care or that the bad reaction was observed by qualified medical staff.

Even if not true, it would still be easy to get a doctor to vouch for it.
