CDC warns against travel for Labor Day weekend as COVID continues to spread

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is strongly urging those who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 to stay home for Labor Day.

With coronavirus cases on the rise, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky warned that even those who have received their coronavirus shots should take extra precaution if they decide to travel for the holiday weekend.

“Given where we are with disease transmission right now, we would say that people need to take ... these risks into their own consideration as they think about traveling,” Walensky said, adding that people who are fully vaccinated should wear masks if they opt against staying home.

“If you are unvaccinated, we would recommend not traveling.”

Walenksy noted deaths have risen by 2.3% over the previous week to a seven-day average of 896 deaths per day.

The United States is surpassing a daily average of more than 160,000 new cases a day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In recent weeks, some states have seen record numbers of hospitalizations, particularly among those who are unvaccinated.
