While these may be “the bad old days”, conversations with my sisters about their experiences over the last 40 years as professionals say it’s gotten better, but not all perfect. The crap they went through as professionals was horrible. And enrages me. And in politics it’s still as bad … I heard a story about a lobbying visit to a Congresscritter by four senior researchers in high energy physics, and how a dumbass Congressman spent their valuable 10 minutes “mansplaining” physics to four women who are on Nobel prize probable collaborations.

The misogynistic arrogance is still there and still need to be beaten down.

Don't consider us enlightened as some of today's activities and norms will be judged just as offensive in the future. History must be looked at in light of the time it was made.

jeez, you folks are so naive..

You think this doesn't happen in similar amounts today?
Seriously?

There are many Women these days who are compliant and/or seeking the same sort of stuff..and, certainly,
a never ending supply of the right types men for the other half of this equation.

Obviously, it takes two for a tango..the most important factor here is that
in order for this to work, you need Women who are ok with this (men still all over this arrangement)--if you're talking about Powerful or wealthy men doing 'this'...lots of law around all of this..but it still happens everywhere.

...both halves still here in probably the same kinds of numbers as back then..The rules have changed
a bit...

i know a bunch of folks like this..both ways, and, plenty of enlightened, woke, liberal, neoliberal types who entered into relationships solely for the money, security and benefits..
and quite a few Women..same types, from my greater circle..who are now divorced and who date
only successful men who can offer them security and prestige and the whatnots..

-the more things change, the more they stay the same-
it's true..makes me laugh to see the responses to these comic bits..nothing 's really changed..Women who don't want this now have legal recourse..which is of course, great...The Men have to much much more careful....

I remember a cartoon in "Playboy" magazine from about forty years ago. A buxom woman seated at a desk said "Well detective, I didn't know I had been raped until the check bounced".

Things were MUCH simpler back then.......

A "bimbo" is not any younger woman in a relationship with an older man. I think we just call that normal.

"Derived from Italian and used in the first two decades of the 1900s as an insult directed at men, in the subsequent century "bimbo" has been used almost exclusively as a gendered insult for an attractive but dim-witted woman."

Mexican Firm Sticks by 'Bimbo' Bread Name
Christopher K. Hepp - Inquirer

October 18, 2010

Say 'Beembo'

Would you buy bread called bimbo?

Apparently its makers, Bimbo Bakeries, out of Mexico, are a bit concerned that some of you might not.

Hence a few strategically placed billboards that have appeared on I-95 and elsewhere in Philadelphia recently offering a helpful pronunciation tip: "Say 'Beembo!' "

As the global economy flattens boundaries between cultures and countries, Bimbo Bakeries' parent company, Grupo Bimbo, has discovered it has a bit of a hurdle to overcome as it seeks to become a national bread brand in the United States.

Who, after all, would consider a promiscuous airhead to be a good marketing tool for a family staple?

It does not matter that the name in Spanish has no particular meaning and is simply, according to one explanation offered by the company, a feel-good word created out of whole cloth.

That the folks at Grupo Bimbo know they have a problem is evident from the billboards and their decision in February to trademark the phrase "Say 'Beembo!' "

Attempts to reach a representative at the company who would speak about the issue, however, were unsuccessful.

A representative for Bimbo Bakeries USA did release the following statement about the billboards:

"The humorous billboards are a fun way of helping consumers relate to the brand's name BIMBO (pronounce Beembo), which is also the name of our bear character. BIMBO is derived from the Italian word bambino, meaning little boy."

Grupo Bimbo's website offers an alternative explanation for the name, describing it as a combination of bingo, the game, and Bambi, the Disney film.

The name, along with the cute bear as a mascot, helps set the brand apart in South and Central America.

The marketing problem has become a visible local issue since Bimbo Bakeries USA moved its national headquarters from Fort Worth, Texas, to Horsham last year. The move followed Bimbo's $2.38 billion purchase of the Western Division of George Weston Bakeries.

That confirmed Grupo Bimbo's bid to extend its reach across the continental United States.

Grupo Bimbo is Mexico's largest food corporation and a multinational baking giant that owns Stroehmann, Arnold, Freihofer's, and Brownberry bread; Boboli pizza; Thomas' English Muffins; and Entenmann's cakes.

It opened its first Mexican plant in 1945 and started exporting and distributing its leading products into California and Texas in 1984.

Bimbo bread was initially aimed at the Hispanic market in this country, but it has broadened its reach to a more general market.

Leonard Lodish, the Samuel R. Harrell professor of marketing at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, is one who thinks Bimbo will have a difficult time shaking the cultural weight of its name in this country.

"I think Grupo Bimbo is foolish to use that name here," he said.

The issue is a common one, he said, as companies expand into new markets. Chevrolet confronted the issue when it introduced the Nova into Latin American markets, he said.

There were more than a few wags who dubbed the car, no va, or no go, in Spanish, he said.

"Multinationals have to be very careful if they are going to try to have a world brand," Lodish said. "They have to look at what a name means.

Other information is that the name originally came from combining the words "bingo" and "Bambi", both popular in Mexico at the time.

"I think Grupo Bimbo is foolish to use that name here," he said.

Many US and other corporations have made a faux pas or two when naming products destined for foreign markets.

Clairol launched a curling iron called "Mist Stick" in Germany even though "mist" is German slang for manure.

Coca-Cola's brand name, when first marketed in China, was sometimes translated as "Bite The Wax Tadpole."

Colgate launched toothpaste in France named "Cue" without realizing that it's also the name of a French pornographic

Coors translated its slogan, "Turn It Loose," into Spanish, where it is a colloquial term for having diarrhea.

Electrolux at one time marketed its vacuum cleaners in the U.S. with the tag line: "Nothing sucks like an Electrolux." Ok, that one is probably a mistake anywhere but Sweden.

Ford blundered when marketing the Pinto in Brazil because the term in Brazilian Portuguese means "tiny male genitals."

Frank Perdue's tag line, "It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken," got translated into Spanish as "It takes a sexually stimulated man to make a chicken affectionate."

Gerber marketed baby food in Africa with a cute baby on the label without knowing that, in Ethiopia, for example, products usually have pictures on the label of what's inside since many consumers can't read.
Ikea products were marketed in Thailand with Swedish names that in the Thai language mean "sex" and "getting to third base."

KFC made Chinese consumers a bit apprehensive when "finger licking good" was translated as "eat your fingers off."

Mercedes-Benz entered the Chinese market under the brand name "Bensi," which means "rush to die."
Nike had to recall thousands of products when a decoration intended to resemble fire on the back of the shoes resembled the Arabic word for Allah.
Panasonic launched a Web-ready PC with a Woody Woodpecker theme using the slogan "Touch Woody: The Internet Pecker."

Parker Pen, when expanding into Mexico, mistranslated "It won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you" into "It won't leak in your pocket and make you pregnant."

So Bimbo isn't all that bad, but still, Mexico might rethink it.

As a historically patriarchal society and government, there aren't any really popular, sexually disparaging names for men, or at least not nearly as many, as they are for women, bimbo included.

It's all been about keeping women 'in their place', shaming them for sexual activity that would make us locker room heroes.

We're still a long way from parity.

Not that I want women to successfully create and popularize sexually-based male-only insults that cut us to the quick, in the name of parity.

How wrong would that be.

LOL
