South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has shook off criticism about the event, calling the study by economists “not factual whatsoever.” After top infectious disease official Dr. Anthony Fauci said he was “concerned” about this year’s event amid the spread of the delta variant, Noem accused him of targeting her state for political reasons.

This isn't the outbreak you're looking for.

Glad you asked, Dr. Jha has you covered with an article in Wapo posted this morning! A taste:

Eighteen months into the pandemic, we’ve learned that outdoor gatherings are reasonably safe — it’s the indoor activities that invariably follow that are deadly. At Sturgis, it is unlikely that the outdoor bike rallies were a problem. Most of the spread likely happened in the evenings, when people crowded into bars and restaurants, most unvaccinated, all unmasked. Large gatherings that work on keeping indoor spaces safe through vaccinations, masking, ventilation and other techniques can keep the entire gathering safer.

…and the sad part is that only a fraction of the folks who attend Sturgis are from South Dakota. With a typical incubation period of 6 days, the bike enthusiasts often get sick (and contagious!) in their home states afterward. (See for instance, Idaho, which is declaring an emergency as their hospitals are overwhelmed.)

One could hardly imagine a better, more complete plan if your goal was to spread this deadly disease. Thanks, Kristi.

Freedum!

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally linked to 20% of US coronavirus cases in August: researchers

Quote

That's more than 266,000 coronavirus cases attributed to the 10-day event, which more than 460,000 people attended despite fears it could become a so-called super-spreader event.

"We conclude that the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally generated public health costs of approximately $12.2 billion," the researchers wrote in a paper. "This is enough to have paid each of the estimated 462,182 rally attendees $26,553.64 not to attend."

I asked about this in another post, and apparently that was too early.

50% of attendees infected and the event linked to 20% of US cases?

"This is enough to have paid each of the estimated 462,182 rally attendees $26,553.64 not to attend."
