Texas Gov. Abbott defends new abortion law, vows to 'eliminate all rapists'

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott defended the state's restrictive new abortion law Tuesday, saying it doesn't force victims of rape to give birth and vowing to "eliminate all rapists."

Abbott, a Republican, took questions from reporters Tuesday morning after an event at which he signed a sweeping election bill into law. Asked whether the abortion law would force rape victims to give birth, he said: "It doesn't require that at all, obviously. It provides at least six weeks for a person to get an abortion.

Politicians who take away human rights and/or encourage (or even require) behavior that leads to death from COVID-19 should be removed from office, and branded on the forehead with a scarlet "A" for "@#$%&".

It provides at least six weeks for a person to get an abortion.

Absolutely true…if that woman is psychic. As I’ve mentioned before, we’re talking about 6 weeks of “gestational age”, which is the number of weeks since the beginning of the last menstrual period.

Which is to say, the rape would take place after 2 weeks of “gestational age”, when fertilization actually occurs. So unless that woman is psychic, she’s really limited to a maximum of 4 weeks…and only 2 after she’s missed her following regular period, if she’s “regular”, which many women aren’t.

In unrelated news,

Quote

As a novel six-week abortion ban has significantly curtailed abortion care in Texas, another bill, aimed at restricting medication abortion, is set to become law in the state.

The Legislature this week advanced the bill, called Senate Bill 4, which would limit access to medication abortions for many… The measure would prevent physicians from administering it to people who are more than seven weeks pregnant and prohibit the pills from being mailed in Texas.

Other Republican grandstanders vying for higher office governors have taken notice:

Quote

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem on Tuesday issued an executive order to restrict access to abortion medication and make it clear that medicine-induced abortions fall within state law requiring an in-person consultation with a physician.

… South Dakota law already places that requirement on doctors…

Noem isn’t going to let herself be outdone in a race to the looney bottom with Abbott, so she issued an executive order for something already in South Dakota law. RollingEyesSmiley5

So, in that (possibly as much as) 2 weeks since your (regular?) period was supposed to start, you need to get an appointment with a doctor, before he/she can prescribe the pills, for you to pick up and take…but if you’re one day past seven weeks, you (and your doctor) are breaking Texas law - or two actually, for having an abortion past six weeks, and using that medication to do so over seven weeks, using a drug which is FDA-approved for up to 10 weeks gestation.

The Republican Party is becoming a caricature of itself.

PS - If you don’t believe what’s above, here’s Politifact’s take, calling Abbott’s statement false.

The Republican Party is becoming a caricature of itself.

Becoming? That happened many years ago, well before 45 and his ilk.

Given that a person needs to commit rape in order to become a rapist, how is he going to eliminate them? Round up the "usual suspects"?

And have they considered the long term effects of some of their policies, they trying to kill off and lower the population of their base with their "please die from COVID" laws, and they're wanting to increase the population of their opposition with their anti-abortion laws.

1) Make rape legal. Most republicans would support this.

2) Form the department of Pre-Crime. Stop rape before it happens. Tom Cruise is already on the advisory board.

Why is Abbott only now going to "eliminate" all rape and rapists? Why didn't he do that as soon as he got into office?

The Texas "government is planning to implement a prototype "PreCrime" police program. As three clairvoyant humans ("Precogs") visualize details of an impending [rape], officers analyze the data in order to determine the crime's location and apprehend the perpetrator before the crime can occur. The Precogs lie floating in a pool, under sleep-inducing drugs to deprive them of external stimulus and their thoughts are projected onscreen and stored in a database. Would-be [rapists] are immediately imprisoned in a benevolent virtual reality state."

Mandatory chastity belts or for those who opt-out, the state will imprison the woman for her own protection.
