370 new cases in the previous week in my zip code of 36k - up from 18 in the first week of May

I reported here [forums.macresource.com] that there were only 18 cases in that week in my zip code. I didn't check it every week but I think that it even got down to single digits in later weeks.

Last week there were 370 cases. We were almost there!

How does this track with sales of horse paste in your area?

there is a small horse farm nearby - the stats would be skewed

The comparison to the original or earlier strains are skewed, as this is so much more transmissible.

A bit off topic for this thread but I heard an epidemiologist yesterday say on a news show that the U.S. has now passed the threshold of one out of every 500 Americans have died of Covid. 1 out of every 500!

At first I thought that must be wrong but I did a quick estimate based on there being over 600,000 deaths out of a population of over 300,000,000 total population and got a quick estimate that is - 1 out of every 500, so I think she was probably right.

I think that we should use the 1 out of every 500 statistic more often because it seems to make the point better.

Ahhh, but that means that 499 of us are safe so I don't have to fear anything.

Right????

Yeah, 1 in 500 having died is correct at this point, that is with about 1 person in 9 in the US having been diagnosed with COVID-19 so far. I haven't seen any estimates on how many have had the virus but not diagnosed.

The initial death rate was over 2% of the persons diagnosed with COVID, that is only down to 1.6% overall even now. Current cases and deaths gives about a 1% death rate. I would hope that rate goes down even further as more people are vaccinated and additional drugs that are effective against the virus or its symptoms are identified.

Unfortunately that 1 in 500 number is going to keep rising as more get the disease among that 8 in 9 that haven't so far. I suspect eventually it will get to the 1 in 400 mark, hope it doesn't get much past that.

Those number presume that reported death totals are accurate, they are almost certainly not. Try 900,000,000+

1/500 is a great way to showcase this pandemic except - that is only the death count. Many others are alive but living with major health issues.
