Landslide victory for Gov Newsom, recall fails
Posted by: Lemon Drop

Even reddish San Diego supported the Dem.

Now Cali please fix this so you don't waste $300m on another recall .

The same guy has to run again next year in a normal election.

Barely over half an hour to kick Elder's butt.
Yay!

Truth be told, I signed the recall petition as "Uramutta Phuggar," hoping there'd be lots of bogus signatures, and that the recall wouldn't gen enough legs to proceed.

San Francisco and Marin Counties are in a neck and neck race to see who gets the highest % NO vote -- right now it's Frisco 88 to 85. Even redneck strongholds like San Bernardino and Riverside (where the elected sheriff declared he'd not enforce mask mandates coming from Newsom, Biden or presumably GOD) have voted NO.

GQP under Trump has now lost the House, Senate, Presidency and this recall farce -- will they learn anything or double down again?

While I've been in LA since the late 1960's, I was born in SF, and most of us native San Franciscans don't appreciate the entirety of The City being referred to by the 19th century nickname for the then unsavory part(s) of town. Appreciate the election sentiments, but Otis Redding was the only person that got a pass for his abuse of the name, and he came damn close to joining, if not being a charter member of The 27 Club.

It's like Seattle. There is Seattle inside the city limits, and "Seattle" which is half the county to most people.

When I visited San Fransisco the first time, I fully understood "the Bay Area" is massive, and San Fransisco is just a pretty tiny spot in the center-ish part.

When I lived in the city in the mid-eighties, friends would distinguish between the city of San Francisco and the county of San Francisco. The difference was usually that I lived in the county (outer Richmond and outer Sunset), while they lived in the city (Presidio, Noe Valley, and Upper Market).

Yep, it was stolen. Even before the first ballot was cast. But at least Elder’s show will have huge ratings for the next day or so.

CA Turns Back Red Tide!

Repubs Are Fit To Be Tied!

Larry Elder, the frontrunner to replace Newsom if recalled, has conceded.

So does this mean Elder has fully accepted the election results as valid, or will he begin election fraud rhetoric.

Or will he skip it, in light of his premeditated, premature election fraud 'campaign'.

I second this. You can send an elected governor to a recall with a small fraction of voters (at his/her most unpopular time), and if you manage to get a simple majority of the recall vote, then someone else can be elected with a tiny minority of that recall vote.

For instance, if the recall turnout had been weak and Newsom had lost by getting only 48% of the vote (“No”), he would have been replaced by a guy with only ~25% of the recall turnout.

Yeah it's undemocratic and was written into the state constitution during pretty undemocratic times. Time for an amendment, an amendment the state GQP is too weak to stop.

Were California a GQP stronghold and Grey Davis their Governor, that amendment process would have started the day after they took back the third branch (Gov).

True since 1856:

Quote

The City of San Francisco was the seat of San Francisco County until 1856, when the county was split into the consolidated City and County of San Francisco in the north, with the remainder of old San Francisco County becoming the new County of San Mateo.)

San Diego really isn't reddish anymore. The small percentage of Trumpers in the east county are far outnumbered by the city and coastal communities - it's a very similar demographic as exists in the state.

San Diego's City Council has one out of nine members Republican; the Mayor and 8 councilmembers are Dems. County government has only 2/5 supervisors Republicans.

Even Darell Issa's victory last year was not an easy win - and that was in the east/north county enclave of Trumpers.

Things have changed.

Noteworthy is how few people actually live in the counties that voted majority "Yes" compared with the rest of the counties in California. The map makes the results look far closer than reality. It's a whole lot of area with very few voters - relatively. That upper northeast corner that shows yes probably has fewer than 250,000 voters. Compare that with the total number of voters in the state … somewhere in the 30m range.

Technically it was bikers' patches on their colors that got the pass, because "San Francisco" was a much tougher fit, and their verbal abuse of The City's name was primarily confined to use among biker club members, and their hanger's ons, as a sign of their bikerism....

and Otis was Black and had very long coattails, that admittedly grew much longer after his death..... My indoctrination into The City's nomenclature history predated Otis's rise to prominence and premature death, and I moved to LA while "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" was still a current song. A couple of years later, my father died in a similarly sized (to Otis's Beechcraft) Piper Aircraft plane when it crashed next to Mavericks at Half Moon Bay; though still way too young, pops was considerably older than Otis. My apologies for not including Otis's coattails originally, but hopefully it was an excusable ignorance due to lack of proximity.

Yes, I too, had many friends from South City, which while south of, and adjacent to San Francisco, was, and is in a whole other county, San Mateo County. It may share part of its name, and the Bayshore Hwy/Fwy w/ The City, and people from there can also be quite territorial at times, definitely NOT wanting any confusion w/ their more famous northern neighbor.
