Thousands of these Haitian refugees will stay in the US. They have already been moved to other cities where nonprofits and local governments will help them.

Not sure how they are determining who stays and who gets sent to Haiti.

So the Biden administration needs to clarify what is happening here.

There's an important distinction in the legal status of refugees v. migrants so those words should not be used interchangeably.

In his stinging resignation letter, dated Wednesday, Mr. Foote criticized the Biden administration for deporting some of the thousands of the Haitian migrants who had traveled to the Texas border from Mexico and Central America in recent days.

“I will not be associated with the United States’ inhumane, counterproductive decision to deport thousands of Haitian refugees and illegal immigrants to Haiti, a country where American officials are confined to secure compounds because of the danger posed by armed gangs in control of daily life,” Mr. Foote wrote in the letter,

I've never heard of nor been to any country that did not take secure borders seriously. You have to know who is entering and leaving your country.

Apparently you've never been to Europe where most of the border stations of old were largely been abandoned (though some have been temporarily repurposed as a result of Covid).

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

What did that area look like a year before the Amazon building; 10 years before, 20 year before, 50 years before?

Most of TJ looks better than that. One of my favorite places to enjoy.

Most of Seattle looks better than that. Even after clearing one camp near the county courthouse, workers and jurors still don't want to be in the area because many of the residents just moved a few blocks away. A year ago a slightly smaller Amazon warehouse opened up about 20 miles from where I am, so there hasn't been time for the shacks to build up around it. The location is far from most services, so it might not attract a camp like shown.

We have been told illegal immigration is a problem for so long that now we all believe it. It was something that functioned pretty well when we pretended it wasn't happening. A lot of people moved back and forth across the border and didn't actually try to live here. A lot of people lived here and worked for upper-class people or companies and that was a symbiotic relationship for all involved. But the right wing kept pounding away at it because they love to oversimplify complex issues and turn them into scare tactics. It's made us hard-hearted as a country and less willing to think about illegals as human beings.

We also have over 60 000 Canadians living illegally in the US and nobody seems to notice or care.

"A lot of people lived here and worked for upper-class people or companies and that was a symbiotic relationship for all involved."

I agree people are being manipulated for political gain, and many have become hard-hearted. However, I personally have known many, many illegal immigrants who have been grossly mistreated and had no recourse because they are here illegally. For example, I knew a family with young female children who were being molested by their landlord. Because of my experience I believe most of the other stuff I've read about mistreatment of illegal immigrants.

It doesn't make sense to me that it's ok to have a sloppy, indeterminate way to limit but allow illegal immigration. I don't buy that it used to work so awesomely. Yeah, slave labor tends to benefit some people, but I don't know if I would call it symbiotic. Seems more predatory to me.

My wife just got back from Sweden 3 weeks ago, and we have traveled there regularly. It's not been our experience that they don't have a pretty good handle on who enters and leaves. They don't have secure borders, but they have issues, and know they do.
