‘ Gov. Brad Little of Idaho said that when he returns from his trip to the Mexican border, he will rescind executive orders issued by Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin that exempt K-12 schools, universities, and anyone with a conscientious objection from mandated vaccination and testing.

Little said on Tuesday evening that he would be "rescinding and reversing any actions taken by the Lt. Governor" when he returned to Idaho on Wednesday and that he had "not authorized the Lt. Governor to act on [his] behalf." McGeachin, who is acting governor in Little's absence, announced Tuesday that she had issued an executive order "fixing" Little's executive order on "vaccine passports."

McGeachin also tried to deploy the Idaho National Guard to the Mexican border but was informed by the Idaho National Guard's commanding general that she did not have the power to activate the troops for that purpose.

Little was on a visit to the southern border to converse with other Republican governors about the immigration issue when McGeachin issued the executive orders. In the absence of Little, McGeachin is the acting governor of Idaho until his return.

The two have clashed in the past, with McGeachin banning mask mandates while Little was out of the state in May. Little overturned the ban immediately upon returning to the state, calling the backdoor executive order an “irresponsible, self-serving political stunt.” ‘

How absurd that state law gives the Lt. Gov that kind of power when the Governor is simply out of the state not incapacitated.

It’s all part of her campaign to run for governor. I expect she will win easily.

Is the governor unaware of what country his state actually borders?

Next time, take the Lt Governor with you. But I'm guessing he can't stand to be in the same room with them. Is Idaho a state where the Lt governor is elected separately?

“ Though both are Republicans, in Idaho, the governor and lieutenant governor do not run on the same ticket. McGeachin is running against Little for governor in 2022. “

Her exec order most likely isn't legal, according to the Idaho Statesman newspaper. Not that she cares.

CAN THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR ISSUE AN EXECUTIVE ORDER ABOUT ANYTHING? No. Whether made by the governor or lieutenant governor, it has to be a legal executive order.

WAS THIS INSTANCE OF AN EXECUTIVE ORDER LEGAL? Probably not. Following McGeachin’s May attempt, Rep. Melissa Wintrow, D-Boise, requested that the Idaho Attorney General’s Office clarify the legality of McGeachin’s actions. Deputy Attorney General Brian Kane wrote a detailed letter in response. Under state law, school district trustees, cities, counties and public health districts have the power to determine policies to protect public health. State law also prohibits executive orders from changing state law.

it's how the repubs campaign now - do something outrageous that the wacko base loves and don't worry about the fallout. It doesn't have to be legal or long lasting - it just needs to be outrageous.

Of course, they are themselves exempt from laws they do not find convenient.

People in Idaho have always been more pragmatic than anything. The most popular governor ever was a democrat because he tried to do the right thing for everybody. Idaho is changing massively, and people are being displaced from their homes due to hugely increasing property taxes, rent and housing prices, and with that has come political candidates from outside the state. Case in point is our mayor in Boise who is an absolutely cookie-cutter prototypical progressive who started her term by insulting every Idaho native and talking about free birth control and abortions, which you know isn't going to go over well here. The change in politicians is occurring alongside a lot of changes that have been devastating for Idaho natives, so they are pissed and they are going to war. Unfortunately that is going to be Trumpy.

Gov. Little is a very decent guy, very much in the same vein as traditional politicians in Idaho. He is not Trumpy at all, but of course progressives hate him. I don't think it's at all a done deal that McGeachin will win, but the radical change in Idaho may cause an over reaction, so you never know. I personally am hoping Idaho continues to be livable for me and my family for at least a few more years, but it doesn't look good. It was heavenly.

Thank you for the local perspective kj.

I'm a fan of Boise Mayor Lauren McClean. I think she has national leadership potential. She and her husband chose Idaho 20 years ago as a place to raise their family. After a decade on city council, she won 66% of the vote in the mayoral runoff, so apparently her views are popular.

She has spoken out strongly against white supremacy. In Idaho. That's moral courage.

She was frequently on TV during the early days of the pandemic due to her sound leadership.

My main point is not to criticize her. It's not really that important, but her win was s a load more nuanced than that, but part of it is that hardly anyone who used to be in Boise is in Boise now. Another is she ran against Mayor Bieter who turned out to be the most arrogant bunghole you can imagine, after being quite the darling for a long while. He was also a democrat, fwiw.

Almost no one likes white supremacy, even here, so I don't think it takes any more moral courage here than it does anywhere. But the way it came out (probably at least in part due to the press) sounded pretty insulting. The rest of what came out was a real miscalculation on her part about where people in Idaho are as far as values. She may have learned a lesson.

To criticize her, or things she has done in no way implies I have a problem with everything she has done or said. It's popular to smear people by framing things that way, but it isn't fair. I criticize her, therefore I must be a white supremacist, since she's against white supremacy. I see what you've done there winking smiley

Anyway, my post wasn't really about her, and I understand because you share her values, you feel the need to speak up for her. Not everyone has the same values though.

I'm half and half, so I get lectured by both sides. To me, where I'm at, I would rather have a guy like Little as governor than either someone like McClean or definitely someone like McGeachin. Both McClean and Little are reasonable people, but McGeachin is not.

Oh gosh, I'm not sure how you got that from my comment. I definitely am not calling you a white supremacist!

I think you're a bit sensitive about people making assumptions about you because of where you live. I totally get that. I can be a bit prickly myself when people gratuitously mock southerners.

I really love Idaho and I've followed the politics for a few decades. This started for multiple reasons: I lived next door in Washington, I followed the wolf reintroduction issue, some good friends live in Boise and in Sun Valley, and when I first drove thru Idaho about 18 years ago, taking kids to summer camp, I was blown away by the natural beauty. Hope to visit again soon.

I actually didn't mean to say you were doing that, but I guess that's what I did. Sorry. I just wanted to clarify because I think it could appear that way. I do think politicians do that on purpose though.
