Just saw that come across...

let's hope we have a better climate next month for a more permanent fix.

He didn't relent. He just decided to change the timeline to better suit his nefarious goals.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Debt is only a crisis when the Democrats are in charge.

Exactly, MMcC will not give in, or ever admit to giving in.

There was real traction on ending the filibuster via a carve-out provision from even the most conservative Dems.

MM had no option.

Which is still an option for Schumer, if Manchin and Sinema would go along (and there are suggestions that they were about to do just that).

But given this time, they should get their reconciliation bill together and pass it. It sounds like the moderates and progressives are willing to compromise from their respective starting points. Not sure this is what Biden had planned, but it’s been a pretty good example of moving the Overton window in practice.

They really should consider including a permanent debt ceiling fix in the reconciliation bill, but they probably won’t.

Apparently a permanent fix for the debt can’t be passed through reconciliation, only a debt fix for money being spent through reconciliation as well as money already allocated.
