I can't waste my energy hate reading Ross Douthat of the nytimes anymore

Sure, I live in a liberal bubble but I'm still interested in contrasting ideas and nytimes offers some conservative opinion writers, one of which is Ross Douthat. Its interesting to see how he justifies a lot of conservative thinking and actions. A bit too much.

His most recent piece is titled How Will Blue America Live With Covid? and its largely premised on the idea that liberals are engaging in a lot of pointless mask wearing. When are they going to stop?? What if covid becomes endemic, will they wear masks forever more? But here's where I drew the line -

"Especially since the culture of deep-blue America is caught up in the same toxic feedback loops of polarization as deep-red America."

Yeah...and conservatives attempting to overthrow the government is basically equivalent to fastidious mask wearing.

I'm done with that guy.

---

This is the sort of conservative stuff that can suck me in - seems reasonable at first until somewhere along the way we jump into crazy land.

(if you want links, do a google search, I'm not going to encourage people to waste their time)

He is clever, and has a reasonably good heart, and he's hopelessly unobjective.

After a bit of reading comprehension practice like we learned in Jr High it becomes easy to spot a false premise. Pretty much occurs in the first line or at least the first paragraph. It’s also what trolls depend on when trying to engage people in arguments.

Wow, just think what could happen if we keep wearing masks.

Reduced transmission of seasonal flu and colds, etc.

The horror!

Don’t give these conservative columnists’ pieces clicks.

Seems like some conservatives can't criticize what has happened to the conservative movements in general without feeling the need to say "a pox on both their houses". False equivalences flourish in those cases.

Wearing a mask in a hospital’s TB ward is not a political statement. Neither is wearing a mask around Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2.

Not wearing a mask is, however, a political statement, and in the most irresponsible way, one that literally kills innocent people.

I just don’t understand the stubborn ignorance.

You are correct to groan at that paragraph, but smart people do read opinions different than their own. Keep reading, perhaps columnists other than Douthat.
