Wow, just attended a Fauci talk via Zoom

... I'm not sure yet if there's a download link for it (I did a screen recording on my end, but not sure to where I'd upload it, or if I'd be allowed to do that anyway). VERY impressive.

For any of the forumites here who, like me, are data hounds ... this might be worth a watch.

I was especially interested where he was discussing the possibilities of interventions using protease inhibitors, etc. He confirmed the efficacy of the vaccines: Moderna > Pfizer > J&J, and made a REALLY good case for the boosters.

Omicron: maybe lower severity, but about 3-fold greater reinfection risk! Neutralization of Omicron from sera with two doses of vaccine was significantly diminished, so Omicron may be evading the vaccines, but likely will have reasonably good protection with a booster... if I understood it correctly, the suggestion was that titers against Omicron from people with three doses are pretty close to those against the wild-type strain with only two doses.

He thinks the likeliest we'll be able to achieve with corona is control, no possibility of elimination or eradication; and to control this, we might have to do mandatory vaccination and other mitigation methods (plus vaccinating the rest of the world).

How to handle vaccine hesitancy? He says he's beset by great frustration about it; he opines that we could knock it out of the park, if we could get everyone vaccinated. The degree of hesitancy has to do with ideological persuasion, which he says is completely unacceptable and inconsistent with all the fundamental tenets of public health. Vaccine requirements... he doesn't like the word "mandate". grinning smiley

Emphasized the necessity to get the rest of the world vaccinated, otherwise we will just see more and more variants pop up...

No dramatically new information there, but he put it all together in a way I hadn't seen before, a very short and concise talk.

Edit: apparently they'll be posting the talk to YouTube... in a week. RollingEyesSmiley5

Yes, and no more moments like this one:

I can maybe post a few salient screenshots, if anyone's curious. He put up some graphs and such that were really illuminating... for example, what happens with a booster versus just the two shots, and the most recent publications on Omicron.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

OK ... not sure if there's any easy way to get the image links for all of these, but here's the gallery:

(obviously this isn't all his slides, just the ones I found most interesting)

Here were the ones I found the most concerning:

... obviously we're entering a new wave, and this isn't even considering Omicron.

Yikes!

(Note those first two and the fourth one...)

... but there was a little hope there at the end:

(He was making the point to compare Omicron after the third dose, versus the wild-type after two doses, they're similar... get your boosters, people!!!)

Where was this given? Please post the link when it goes up.

For anyone interested in an overview of the biology of the pandemic, MIT did their course 7.00 COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 and the Pandemic again this year.

It's aimed at MIT undergraduates so YMMV.

Did they give Senators Cruz & Paul and Govs Abbot & Desantis a rebuttal opportunity?

And those MIT lectures... wow, wish I had time to watch all those!
