New York City braces as Covid cases jump
The average of 2,899 confirmed cases a day over the past week is up from a daily average of around 1,800 cases over the past 28 days. The positive test rate has also spiked.

New York City, once the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, is seeing some unwelcome echoes of 2020.

Newly reported Covid-19 infections rose sharply this week. Testing sites across the city once again saw long lines. Outbreaks forced some schools to move final exams online. A spate of Broadway shows canceled performances.

The city averaged 2,899 confirmed cases each day over the past week, according to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. That’s up from a daily average of around 1,800 cases over the past 28 days.

Dr. Jay Varma, a professor at the Weill Cornell Medical School and a senior adviser to Mayor Bill de Blasio, said the percentage of people testing positive doubled in just three days over the past week.

“Um, we’ve never seen this before in #NYC,” Varma tweeted Thursday.

About half of those who test pos for Omicrom are asymptomatic. So how many running around are actually infected? It's this false sense of health that will keep on killing.

News reporting is emphasizing how easily this new variant spreads, but hardly anyone is reporting how deadly is this variant. Do they know yet?

If it is less deadly, then maybe we may be on the road to the pandemic turning endemic, with Covid-19 being with us much like the influenza virus is.

…which is probably our best-case scenario at this point. It’s unlikely, given the political opposition to the COVID vaccine, that we’ll be able to outrun the virus’s mutation rate by knocking out any particular strain of it with herd immunity.

But if it evolves to nearly everyone gets it, but few people have serious symptoms or die, that may be the best we can hope for…

PS - This is not to say vaccination is futile. There’s pretty compelling evidence that it can save your life (and perhaps the lives of those around you), even if it doesn’t eliminate all breakthrough cases.

New data out of UK says omicron is not milder than delta. It is putting people in the hospital faster than delta.

But for boostered people it may just give more antibodies without making us sick. We don't have nearly enough boostered people for that to end the pandemic before the next VOC appears.

Full vax plus booster plus precautions is the way out. Unfortunately a large percent of us would rather risk early death.

"There is significantly increased risk of developing a symptomatic Omicron case compared with Delta for those who were two or more weeks past their second vaccine dose, and two or more weeks past their booster dose (for AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines), the report found.

Depending on vaccine effectiveness estimates against symptomatic infection from the Delta variant, this translates into vaccine effectiveness estimates against symptomatic Omicron infection of between zero per cent and 20 per cent after two doses, and between 55 per cent and 80 per cent after a booster dose."
