Finally - A judge gets it.

District Judge Tanya Chutkan sentenced a capitol rioter to five years of prison.

As she handed down the sentence, she said "It has to be made clear that trying to stop the peaceful transition of power, assaulting law enforcement, is going to be met with certain punishment. Not staying at home, not watching Netflix, not doing what you were doing before you got arrested."

Being sentenced is a good start. Let's hope he actually serves the time.

A tremendous sense of satisfaction washed over me, before even getting to the rest of the post.

I've been angry at every sentencing I've see so far, as even three years is too light.

This feels like someone has truly taken this seriously, with little to no regard or concern for optics, other than making it clear "that trying to stop the peaceful transition of power, assaulting law enforcement, is going to be met with certain punishment. Not staying at home, not watching Netflix, not doing what you were doing before you got arrested."

Much respect, Judge Chutkan.

I hope her action sends the same message to other judges as well, and inspires them to follow her lead.

I think the judge does believe that the sentences have been too light in general but it's also the case that Palmer is the first person found guilty in a federal court that physically attacked the police. He was bound to get a heavier sentence for that.

“On Friday, Chutkan said many others shared Palmer's objection to the 2020 election results and "perhaps thought the election was stolen in some way."

But, she added, "they stayed home. You decided on your own free will to leave Florida and come to Washington and go to the rally. That's your right. You're not being sentenced for your political views. When you left that rally and went to the Capitol and saw what was going on and engaged in combat with a law enforcement officer — that's what you're being punished for."

The Capitol attack was not a protest but rather "a violent attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power," said Chutkan, an appointee of President Barack Obama, noting the rioters caused destruction, death and injuries both seen an unseen.”

Substitute’Fox News’ for ‘Netflix’. Of course, that would expose political bias.

All of the insurrectionists will be instantly pardoned on January 20th 2025 after Trump is re-elected…but the prison sentences are a nice symbolic gesture.

Surely they have Netflix in prison. We're not barbarians.

Yes, but that would have been epic.
