I was listening to the speeches made by Democratic Congress members.

Now it NOT the time to be 'sober and statesmanlike'. Jan 6 2021 was a violent assault on Congress to stop a Presidential election! These right-wing storm troops are traitors to this country at the same magnitude of the Confederacy.

They should have been shot 10 feet into the Capitol.

The Democrats in their speeches hardly seemed to sound the alarm over this violent treason and did not call for the maximum penalties and charges against these lunatics.

...and they should have started making aggressive speeches against this coup from January 7th...not waiting a YEAR to do so.

I truly believe that today's politicians on either side do not have the integrity and strength in their convictions to follow through and do what they claim they will.

Really makes me sad. For everyone.

There were many heartfelt and sincere statements made today by politicians. We know that many of them have called Trump a traitor and a ton of other names. They're not afraid of him.

Trump is dangerous but he's not the biggest threat.

The scourge of Trumpism has metastasized and infected every facet of democracy. That's the threat. There's always another Trump to step into the lead role.

So now we have to deal with insurrectionists and the existential threat of at least 40% of our population preparing to do whatever it takes to end our democracy. It's going to take a Herculean effort to defeat them soon enough.

Today wasn't the day for that. Today was to deal with our trauma. If you can call someone a traitor, you can make the charge and put 'em on trial where what the body that's investigating and accusing them calls them matters in a trial.

It's one thing to not like what they do. It's another thing to suggest what they "could" have done. If there are strategies that you know of, that's doable and useable, tell 'em. I'm down with any good idea.

Partisans on both sides want their side to fight. Indeed many of the Trump supporters like that he 'fights' by saying stupid things. (Trumps behavior, otoh, is often cowardly, but I digress.)

The Dems 'soft' approach is based on the idea that they have to persuade some folks in the middle *who do not like the fighting* and who do not really pay attention enough to understand what is really happening.

This is the battle now among the Dems. Do they go for base motivation and fight, or do they try to appeal to norms and gentle argument to the clueless middle. Both sides among the Dems believe they have data supporting their position. (There are also the Dem wonks--the true policy lovers--that believe that doing good stuff works. This is patently not true. But it is still a thing.)

Notice that when the Dems have taken a bit of a fighting stance (eg, last week the White House blaming the unvaccinated and saying the patience of the rest of us is ending) they get slammed by *both sides* for it. The right says 'Biden is dividing us!' and the left says the unvaccinated deserve sympathy. There is *never* a backlash like this when Trump goes racist (in part because the right wing media environment does not allow it.)

btw, Rove showed in 2004 that motivating the crazy worked to reelect Bush. Base motivation was the whole Trump plan. Just sayyin'

Trump is and always has been a 'useful idiot'. It's those people who put him in his position who are ultimately responsible.

I think it would be stupid for the dems to start using a bunch of incendiary language that would turn the "undecideds" and the less reactionary republicans away. They need to play the long game rather than display a knee-jerk reaction that will only satisfy the base urges of already entrenched more liberal or radical democrats.

True that Dump is just one symptom of a much bigger problem.

And one very big part of that problem is that, as soon as you start to question what the truth is, it becomes nearly impossible to have a civil society. Each side is utterly convinced that the other is lying. And facts won't matter, since their opinions are as good as your facts, and they will question the "facts" and claim that they're all made up.
